Funny-smart-man John Oliver, formerly of The Daily Show and current host of Last Week Tonight, focused his energy and wit on the NCAA and March Madness. The result? A take-down of epic proportions.
___
Oliver began by poking fun at the over the top branding of the multi-billion-commercial ad-fueled extravaganza:
“Pretty soon the only thing left to sponsor will be the sponsorships themselves: And now Pepsi presents a Geico look at Nabisco’s Toyota Moment of the Game, brought to you by Taco Bell!”
He then turned to the troubling aspect of this sports enterprise making all this money on the backs of athletes that are not paid a cent:
“Yes. Athletes are paid in an education. The only currency more difficult to spend than Bitcoin!”
And often, they don’t even get that education:
“It gets worse, because many athletes at UNC left school with an unusual language credit: Swahili . . . Encouraging black student-athletes to take bullshit Swahili courses is the kind of institutional prejudice which might well turn up in one of their African American Studies courses!”
In characteristic John Oliver style, it is a perfect blend of laugh-out-load jokes and intelligent criticism.
