Where we come from sets our life path in motion for better or worse, but open ears that care can alter the destination.

Being in this school makes me feel good. Well, just being in Mr. Danziger’s class makes me feel welcomed and he and his wife care for every one of us. They’re trying to help us become better people even after having the problems we have. I like being in the club and in his English class because I get to express myself without being judged. I feel joyous and loved. I like knowing some people actually care for us. – POPS Student

I Come from a Mexican Family
by Randy Chavez
I come from a Mexican family
I come from a dad who didn’t pass the 11th grade
and from a mom who didn’t graduate middle school
I come from kicking it with students in America
and kicking it with narcs in Mexico
I come from an uncle who transported
drugs from Mexico to America
until he got caught,
did some time in jail, then got deported
back to Mexico.
It didn’t matter if he did time
I come from a cousin holding an AK on a dude’s head
making him apologize for jumping me
I come from parents wanting
the best for me
But I think I’m f—ing it up
