Dillan DiGiovanni thinks this man lip syncing to Celine Dion is pretty funny and a little bit sad.
So this story is blowing up the interwebs right now. A man was stuck in an airport overnight and made a video of himself lip syncing to Celine Dion. Time covered it here.
I admit, when I first started watching this I did snicker to myself. I did this mostly because it was a brilliant idea to make a video to pass the time. I spent an overnight in an airport once by myself (not counting the many employees who were there with me) and it wasn’t one of those things I’d do again on purpose. “The threat level is ORRRR-ANGGGGGE” is forever burned into my cerebral cortex from hearing it repeated so many times, to no one in particular.
So yeah. I’ll admit that the idea of a man making a video about being alone in the airport struck me as funny.
But, as a thinker on topics such as these, I asked myself the question, “What makes this so funny, really? Because he’s lip syncing about being alone in the airport or because it’s a man lip syncing to a woman singing?”
And, if it’s the latter, what’s so funny about that? And if that’s funny, would it be just as funny as if he was lip syncing to a man singing about the same thing?
Or wait!
What if he was actually singing a song by the same name? Would that be funny, too?
I did a quick search just for kicks and, hey guys, it seems a person named Eric Carmen wrote a song titled “All By Myself”
Oh damn. Celine’s song is a cover of Carmen’s song. So he’s doing song by a woman doing a song by a man.
I think I just broke the internet.
So, back to the laughing. I think that this man lip syncing to Celine Dion is funny because it blatantly questions the masculine archetype we all know and many of us here are working tirelessly to debunk. This man lip syncing to Celine Dion isn’t “what men do” every day. He is doing something out of the ordinary and something that isn’t what normal men do, so it’s funny.
Yep.
Funny.
Ha ha.
Meh. How many times have we seen this? A dude doing something that defies masculine stereotypes for the cheap laugh? Call me a party-pooper, but it’s 2014. When will this stop being funny? I feel like it’s a little sad that we’re still here. As a nation, we are still at this point where this is a bit of a shocker…or giggle-inducing at least.
So, I ask you, dear readers. Would this video be just as viral and hilarious if he was lip syncing to Eric Carmen, the person who actually wrote the song? Or is it funny just because it’s a guy, a pretty average-looking guy, lip syncing to Celine Dion, one of our most famed and favorite divas?
Want to know what I think is funny? Why does the guy know the song so well? What if he’s winning drag contests on stages all over the world with his impeccable lip syncing skills? What if he does this every night, while as everyone laughs at this video of this guy they perceive as cisgender and heterosexual and going outside the man box.
What if he’s laughing at all of us?
Now that would be funny.

I came across this on another website and watched it and laughed and thought it was brilliant and the thought didn’t even enter my mind that it was a guy lip-syncing to a woman singing a song. I just thought it was a person singing a song that fit the situation perfectly and he was clever enough to capitalize on it. Good for him. Why do people have to over-analyze things??? Just enjoy!
Dillan THANK YOU SOOO MUCH for writing this piece. I personally do not find the video funny but very creative. How he manages to get the phone to move while he sits far away. I am thankful that a man is able to actually ask the question why do people find this funny? Whereas if I was to ask the same question, being a female, I know the reactions i would get from both males and females is, i am overreacting and over thinking it, blah blah blah, no it has nothing to do with the fact he is a… Read more »
