Maybe one day she will understand why her dad is an alcoholic.

She Did Have a History
by Khyra Black
She did have a history.
Her father was an alcoholic. And her mother worked from 8 in the morning till 7 at night to provide a roof over her head and food on the table.
She writes words on a paper in hopes that she will one day understand. Maybe one day she will understand why her dad is an alcoholic. She watched him walk around with pants drenched in pee and head hung low and eyes barely open because the hangover was too unbearable. But she always hugged him when he said “Sorry.” She forgave him, every time. And it’s crazy, because he almost killed her once.
Driving her in the car on the freeway, high on pills and drunk on liquor. Swerving left and right, her head hitting the window, laughing because at first it was funny. At first it was a joke. She didn’t know. She had no clue. She had no clue that he was drunk. She had no clue that he would fall asleep sitting in the driver’s seat, pulled over on the side of Interstate 15.
She had no clue he would say “Sorry” again. And that she would forgive him. She forgives a lot, but she never forgets. She has cried a lot. She has fought for her grades. She has fought for her happiness. She has fought for her. She prays for everything she has. Her praying makes her stronger. And God makes her wiser.
“Lord, please give me strength to overcome obstacles in my life. Whether it is of You, to make me stronger or of the evil one who tries to knock me down. Despite it all, Satan’s evil works will not prevail, for the battle is already won and I shall overcome. In Jesus’ name, I pray.
Amen.
