We can start small and experience significant changes — Erik Kruger shows us how.

If you are reading this, then I assume that you understand the importance of habits. You know that almost 50% of your day is made up of automatic actions. These automatic responses to triggers are vital to your existence and mostly go unnoticed by you.
Some of these habits, though, are painstakingly obvious. You know that you need to change them. Hell, you have tried countless times.
To eat better. To stop smoking. To exercise more.
But you keep failing…
Habits are complex. Anyone who tells you that by just repeating the same action over and over for 21 days will lead to a new habit is misinformed. To really change a habit, you need to dive deep into your psyche and daily life. I am happy to tell you more.
But for now. Can I reveal a super simple way to help you get going?
Start small. Really small. Even smaller than that.
We fail because we want to eradicate a habit with complete transformation. It rarely works.
Instead, if you are trying to improve the way you eat. Commit to one healthy meal. Only one. Eat whatever you want for the rest of the day, but try and start your day with a simple, healthy breakfast. Or add one fruit. Or drink 500ml more water. Choose only one thing to add.
If you want to start training, go for 5 push ups today. Then maybe 6 tomorrow. And then just maintain that for a week.
If you want to quit smoking. Cut down on one cigarette today. Only one. Then next week, go for two.
The idea is that we are slowly ingraining a new habit. The more the habit becomes ingrained, the more your behaviour will change. The more your behaviour starts changing, the more you will see results. The more you see results, the more you will want to change your behaviour.
A beautiful, simple loop that started with one small action.
