A wild, futuristic, provocative ride into the heart of a concept that Jason Silva calls “radical openness”.
Jason Silva is a man of some pretty wild techy videos. And this one, for TedGlobal2012, is the same kind of futuristic, rapid-fire, conceptual, hallucenogenic ride we’ve come to expect from Jason. But if you can get past the Awwwwww of the ride, slow down the words enough to grasp their meaning, what he’s saying is actually equally amazing. He talks about the pace of technological growth technology, which will continue until “the entire of our universe is at our fingertips. If you look at how there has been more growth in the past 100 years than in the past billion years. Terence McKenna said that from the moment that human beings invented language, biological evolution essential ceased and evolution became a cultural epigenetic phenomenon.”
And in Jason’s place of radical openness, the fuel is one’s imagination — he quotes The Imagination Factory as saying, “what imagination does is it allows us to conceive of delightful future possibilities, pick the best one and then pull the future forward to meet it.”
Radical openess is where the mundane gets replaced by awe.
We’re there.

“Terence McKenna said that from the moment that human beings invented language, biological evolution essential ceased and evolution became a cultural epigenetic phenomenon.”
Biological evolution has – of course – never stopped.
It’s just so slow we don’t notice it anymore, being immersed (as we are) in much faster technological and cultural evolutions.
But we’re subject to biology nevertheless, much like our primates ancestors.
Things like sexual drive, fight or flight, parental istincts, come mainly from our biology.
Thinking that biology will be overcome is very naive… until we’ll be able to abandon our bodies, that is. 😉
People always seem to like the idea of the exchange of ideas a lot more in theory than they do in practise. And as a metaphor of biological genes we should remember that genes don’t all get swept together in a big pot where they all do a big sexy-dance and combine and produce new genes. Genes co-operate in gangs and try to beat the everliving shit out of the other gangs of genes. They try to destroy their competitors, even and perhaps especially if their competitors are within the same species gene pool. Ideas do the same things. Radical… Read more »
