What can you learn from Mr. Draper and the rest of the male cast when it comes to dating in modern times? (no not the outdated sexist come-ons.)

Mad Men has captured thousands of people’s interest since it first broadcast. We love the 60s style, the decor and, especially, the brooding male protagonist who seems able to seduce any female in sight.
So, what can you learn from Mr. Draper and the rest of the male cast when it comes to dating in modern times? Is it all outdated sexist come-ons or is there something we’ve lost since the 60s? Here’s a Mad Men style guide to dating.
Pick-up lines
Pick up lines seem outdated in this day and age, but it seemed to work well back then. So maybe there is something to be said for embracing the one-liner. While lines like ‘I would’ve thought you slept all day and bathed in milk’ might be a bit over the top, compliments and flirtatious one liners can sometimes be just what a date needs to get that spark going – whether you met through friends or through eHarmony Canada.
Avoid lines such as ‘what do you do when you’re not lighting up rooms with your smile?’ This might sound rather patronizing in this day and age and, to be honest, horribly cringe-worthy. Give it a go but just remember, use with caution.
Physical contact
Something we can learn from the men on this show is that physical contact can be incredibly seductive. Of course, back then it was much more of a taboo, but it can still have the same effect.
If you’re with your date, things are going smoothly, and you think you’re compatible (click here to find out more about finding compatible singles), a little physical contact can be very flirtatious. Whether you’re leaning forward to pick a piece of imaginary lint from her sweater or you’re just touching her hand lightly, this is a bold move that will let her know you’re into her.
It’s important to gauge the situation, however. If it seems she’s not into it, back off. There’s no need to be inappropriate, as can sometimes be the case with our Mad Men who don’t hesitate to grope a female secretary in the middle of the office.
Date wear
Let’s face it; while the men of Mad Men may have their flaws, they look great. In fact, the show has become known for its stylish 60s fashion, and has brought back a love of slicked-back hair and gray flannel suits. So, if you want to dress like Don Draper, here’s how to get the look.
Opt for tailored suits that are thick at the shoulders and chest, but which taper in at the waist. Don’t forget that important bit of small, white linen in the pocket square which Don is never seen without, and always opt for a clean white shirt.
Top it off with a felt fedora and you’ve got the look down. This kind of classic American suit looks excellent on any guy and your date is sure to be immediately impressed with your style.
