Karl Stefanovic, anchor of ‘The Today Show’ in Australia, shows us just how little it matters to everyone what male media figures wear.

We all know how female media personalities are scrutinized, criticized, and judged for their appearance—not only their clothing but also their makeup and hair. But what happens when a male anchor wears the same suit for almost an entire year of broadcasts? Nothing. Not a word. No one even noticed.Photo—Girt Nation/YouTube
It’s a bit of a shame you didn’t provide more detail on this story. Stefanovic wore the same suit every day for a year (apart from a few days where he just couldn’t) letting only his female colleagues know. This was because they had appeared in tabloid media where their clothes and their weight were the main topics of conversation. Whether it was the same suit, or just the same colour or style, really doesn’t matter. The point is, there is a double standard; he was drawing attention to it. I don’t watch him in the mornings (too busy getting… Read more »
@ drew “Whether it was the same suit, or just the same colour or style, really doesn’t matter. The point is, there is a double standard; he was drawing attention to it.” He doesn’t have to point that out. I see it clearly in the dress codes of every company I’ve worked for. Women have more options. Men have more requirements. Women can wear pants or skirts with blouse or sweater. Ties aren’t required for women. Men have to wear pants and dress shirt with tie. Hair, make up, etc. might be an unwritten rule. I’m not debating that, but… Read more »
I have to agree with all the posters before me. The only individual element male professional fashion allows is different ties. And when you watch the montage you see that he definitely changed ties very often. He was not dressed the same all the time. Another thing: One user mentioned that the suit looks different at different times. It could be an artifact of lighting. But if it were really different … that would mean that this guy claimed that he had worn the same suit and everybody believed him, because different male suits really can’t be readily distinguished, and… Read more »
The “Suit” is a male class uniform. Very little change or variation is seen as acceptable……So men are supposed to be happy to live in our narrow little box of clothing choices while women complain about having too much choice? It may be sexism …..But against Whom?
What exactly is the point of this? Are you saying it *should* matter what they wear?
PS: It’s clearly not the same suit. The colour changes from blue to grey to black and back again. So, fail.
Hi. It’s called different lighting – so yeah, thanks, it is the same suit. Also, if you’re so blind as to need the ‘point’ of this article spelling out for you in kindergarten language – here it is: This man wore the same suit on television everyday for a year, and no one noticed. You know why no one noticed? Because society does not judge a man’s ability to do his job by his appearance. Meanwhile, his female co-hosts are constantly criticized for their outfits, hair, make-up, etc. despite the fact that their appearance has NOTHING to do with their… Read more »
No one noticed because wearing the same type of thing day in and day out is what’s *expected of men* adhering to expectations is not a newsworthy story.
What exactly are they trying to prove? That men have a much narrower range of acceptable clothing options? Because that’s what they’ve shown
A man can wear the same specific kind of suit every day because a dark colored suit is one of the very few choices he can make concerning formal wear. Men are expected to adhere to a very narrow restrictive look and any deviation from that is punished.
If they really wanted to show how much people care what a man wears they should have had him wear a red suit, or, god forbid a dress.
If a male news anchor wore a different suit every day of the year…
…who could even tell the difference?
noone looks at modern male formalwear as it is so dismal, not surprised noone noticed lol. there was however alot of negative media , social media commentary when in the summer, president obama wore a brown suit, and a suit without a tie (women havent worn ties since ww2, when it was seen by the women officers as, ‘adding dignity’ to the american female war uniform. they soon realised it was dreadful piece of kit lol). i liked obama’s mild daring, now the midterms are gone, i hope he expands things a little(or preferably alot)again. reagan’s winged-collar morning dress suit… Read more »
