What’s your
“battle song”?
As a movie buff, it’s hard for me to not think of music as literally being the soundtrack of my life. Often I’ll find myself listening to songs specifically because I think they are the perfect accompaniment to the film scene version of what I’m doing at that moment. And because of this I often find myself thinking of what songs I would want to be playing during specific “scenes” in my life that haven’t actually happened yet. How would I score my “meet cute” with the future love of my life? Our first date? Our getting to know each other time? Our break up over an easily explained misunderstanding that we never actually attempt to explain? My lame attempts at re-entering the dating pool? My interrupting her wedding with my flash mob proposal? Our wedding? My realization that I watch far too many romantic comedies?
I also think about my “battle song”. That is, the song that I would want to be playing as I engaged in the most decisive and important “battle” of my life. The thing is, though, as much as I love some obvious choices like Joe Esposito’s “You’re the Best Around”, Frank Stallone’s “Far From Over” or Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger”, I think I’d wanna go way left field and go with:
I dunno why. It’s just a song that fills me with so much energy and is the closest I ever come to feeling anything resembling normal human ambition.
How about you? Have you ever thought about what the soundtrack of your life should be? Do you have a “battle song”? Am I the world’s biggest weirdo who’s only 5’2″?
This is where I admit to thinking about these things way too hard.
When I think battle I think conflict. A pressing situation that must be resolved but the solution is not clear. For them the song of choice is Conga Fury by Juno Reactor. The beat emphasizes the urgency of the situation and the start of it makes me think of a situation where my opponent is about to sneak up on me no matter how hard I try to find him. Out of nowhere he springs into actions and combat ensues!
Hah! I love Downtown. But I would pick “Underdog” by Spoon. Kind of obvious thematically, but it always gets me going.
