Other than law enforcement, who needs high capacity magazines and semi-automatic or automatic weapons?

In America we have more guns than people—so even if we took away all the assault rifles, wouldn’t we still have plenty of weapons? And why are guns thought of as a virtue instead of a vice?
What’s the answer?
In the wake of the Orlando shootings, Bill Maher and his panelists – Lawrence Wilkerson, Josh Barro, and Emily Miller – discuss gun ownership in America. (from HBO)
This is a great four minutes of back and forth on one of the biggest talks we’re having since last week’s shootings (and every shooting before that).

“Polls show 57% of Americans support assault weapons bans. It looks like the opinion in social media over the last 7 days is even more negative on the firearms. The elephant in the room is obviously where these numbers will sit a month from now and if public opinion stays strongly negative or softens as it has post other mass killings.” — Howard K. 36db
What’s next? As we slowly start to chisel away at our rights, what comes next, what kind of guns will be banned next? All the while the murders continue in Chicago which has strict gun laws. Gun laws that have done nothing about the murders where illegal guns are used.
Remember, it took a simple shotgun to murder President Kennedy.
It is the areas outside of Chicago that have weak gun laws, Mr. Brechlin where people buy guns and then use them in the city of Chicago. It wasn’t a shotgun that killed President Kennedy.
If you look at the most gun violence and deaths, it is occurring in the red states that have little or weak gun laws.
Well, Australia had enough of assault weapons and took appropriate action against them.
SEEEdubya – right on! Anyone want to consider how many car deaths are caused each year by people using their TOOLS in an irresponsible manner. Sure, guns are unnecessary in x, y, and z scenarios – but so are x, y and z car journeys as a proportion of total number made, so the comparisons are less ridiculous than they sound. I’ve been hit in a hit-and-run, too. I’ve also (I live outside of a right-to-bear arms country) have been on a firing range more than once, shot and handled firearms, and have a great deal of respect for their… Read more »
This is what’s going on here, too, genius. The main problem in America with it is there are so many assaults on common sense of all this. One can hardly withstand it all. The media, the protests who have an agenda to talk about it, squeamish people who don’t want to upset their family and neighbors, are all in the crowd that is shutting down free speech and openness to real debate. We need, absolutely to get all of this into the light. Both sides. We can’t solve anything without it. Take the video above. One guy took the entire… Read more »
Hmm as long as bill Maher says it god it needs to be reposted as biblical fact. First of all, how about the gmp stopping their silly policy of censorship of what they don’t like. Maybe we could have honest debate. Even if someone calls me an asshole I don’t mind really. I dislike however rants tossed randomly but because they line up with your particular humanistic view they get to go through. Can I post a devastatingly article about hillary like you usually allow about trump? I sincerely doubt it. Anyway. I digress. Who’s using the guns to hurt… Read more »
If you get rid of semi-automatic rifles you haven’t even moved the dial- Feel good / do nothing legislation aimed at thumbing your nose at law abiding people who don’t vote the way you want them to. This is an utter and complete waste of time and resources. Semi-automatic weapons are used in an infinitesimally small number of crimes. Just once someone around here ought to be brave enough to look at gun violence and crime and discuss actual measures that would move the dial. Who represents the majority of people affected by firearm violence / crime? Who commits it?… Read more »
