Who’s your favourite
Batman foe?
I apologize in advance if this post seems a little rushed. My Blu-ray set of the complete Adam West-era Batman TV show finally arrived and my life is going to be mostly dedicated to it over the next little while. It’s my favourite of the all the various live-action Batmans for various obvious reasons, including:
Julie Newmar as Catwoman
Cesar Romero’s mustache
Batman actually spends most of his time Batmanning rather than Boo-hooing
They talk care of his origin in the pilot via A SINGLE LINE OF DIALOGUE and barely ever mention it again
All the jokes I didn’t get when I was a kid
All the jokes I barely get as an adult
Eartha Kitt as Catwoman
All the cameos
Adam West’s brilliantly self-aware deadpan
Robin beat up Bruce Lee
Lee Meriwether as Catwoman
The movie version where Batman can’t get rid of that old-timey bomb
A sense of genuine fun that is only just again being seen in shows like The Flash
Joan Collins as Circe the Siren.
Yvonne Craig as Batgirl
So, since I have Batman on the brain and it’s going to be staying there for awhile, I’d thought I’d ask everyone who your favourite Batman bad guy was. They can be from any iteration of the character–TV, movies, animation, comics, Hostess fruit pie ads, whatever you want.
As much as I love all versions of Catwoman, I’m not going to pick her because she’s been a friend to Batman as often as she has been an adversary, so I’m going to go with the campiest of all Batman’s camp nemeses–Chandrell:
For those unfamiliar with the character, Chandell (as portrayed by Liberace) was a famous concert pianist who was blackmailed by his twin brother Harry (also Liberace, adopting a tough guy pose that is every bit as ridiculous as you’d imagine a tough guy pose from Liberace would be) into a life of crime after he finds out that Chandell has been using a player piano in concert after an injury affected his ability to play. The only possible way a Batman villain could have ever make me happier would have been if there was a 70s TV version where Divine played a nefarious drag queen.
So that’s my pick. Who’s your favourite Batman villain? 100th person to say The Joker gets tickets to Nickelback*!
*This is a joke. There are no tickets. If you try to claim these tickets that do not exist I will mock you on social media.
