It turns out, being spiritual is a very desirable trait that goes hand in hand with masculinity.
When you think about what it means to be “spiritual” in the world today, what comes to mind?
Maybe you think about a deep devotion to exploring higher meaning and purpose. Maybe you think about a commitment to living consciously and compassionately, or bringing deeper sensitivity to your interactions. Maybe spirituality simply means exploring your world with child-like joy, openness, and wonder.
The traits and qualities associated with “being spiritual” usually stay hidden safely out of sight.

Whatever being spiritual means to you, if you also happen to be a guy, here’s a follow-up question: How often do you dare talk about this stuff with the guys at work, your workout buddies, or your Fantasy Football crew?
Probably not too often.
But why not?

The reality is, guys strive to cultivate and project to the world a masculine persona; while the traits and qualities associated with “being spiritual” usually stay hidden safely out of sight. This is generally for one big reason: fear.
Being spiritual does not mean sacrificing your masculinity; in fact, it means just the opposite.
|
Even if they don’t care to admit it, a lot of guys fear that being spiritual (at least, in an open way) makes them come across as soft or emotional. They fear looking weak or insecure. Above all, they fear that if they let the curtain slip on their spiritual self, they risk losing respect. Or worse—they will sabotage their chances of succeeding with the kind of partner they want to meet, attract, and share their lives with.
It’s basically Def-Con 1. The worst-nightmare scenario. They won’t look like the confident alpha male who’s got everything all figured out.
With that in mind, here’s the last question of the day: Does any of this feel familiar to you as a man? If so, I’d like to share why being spiritual does not mean sacrificing your masculinity; in fact, it means just the opposite.

The Magnetism of the Spiritual Man
Long before our ancestors stopped dragging their knuckles, one quality identified the alpha male of the tribe: from fighting to hunting to mating, masculine strength was communicated by a male’s ability to take action with decisiveness, purpose, and confidence. Flash-forward a few millennia, and not much has changed.
The spiritual man is far-more likely to know what he looks for and values in life.

A man who lives and acts with purpose is perceived as “strong.” The confident, decisive male is the apex ape, coming across as maximally equipped to move his tribe foreword toward a better life, which is precisely why being spiritual means a man never needs to fear sacrificing his masculinity!
When the spiritual man expresses himself with tact and openness, his masculine strength and character make him stand out from the crowd—whether it’s in the locker room, the board room, or the bedroom. Living in a spiritual way equips him to act in the alpha ways that create feelings of bonding and attraction—without having to club a rival over the head or drag a woman away by her hair.
Here’s how it works:

The Spiritual Man Inspires Action
The spiritual man is far-more likely to know what he looks for and values in life. It’s this mindset of “humble seeking” that so often ignites recognition and admiration in others (also known as most of humanity) who feel the same way.
Whether we’re pondering why we’re here or empathizing with the plights of others, being spiritual is our concern for the bigger picture. It’s this broader perspective—and the insight it brings—that so often inspires like-minded souls to take action alongside a genuinely spiritual man.
From rallying allies and succeeding in life’s smaller battles (office politics, anyone?) to changing the entire world as we know it (Ghandi, Mandela, Martin Luther King…) it’s the seekers and independent thinkers who most powerfully connect to the hearts and minds of others—an inspiration to action is probably the most “masculine” trait of all. It is these “spiritual” men who have the confidence to act and the conviction to follow through in their beliefs.

The Spiritual Man Is a Beacon
Because the spiritual man also tends to cherish beauty and understanding, it’s usually inquisitive, bright, creative people who feel a strong, almost magnetic pull toward him. From Steve Jobs (Apple’s icon lived by the words of Bob Dylan) to Pete Townshend (Meher Baba was his muse) the spiritual man’s passion for understanding and expression is often contagious, inspiring others to join the tribe and find new ways to create, innovate, and share together.

The Spiritual Man Is a Unifier
Like we talked about, being spiritual means craving a deeper understanding and connection with others, so a spiritual man invest time in thinking about how to make it happen.

Far from being loners, wallflowers, and nerds, spiritual beings cause others to gravitate to them because creating a connection with them feels so easy. Being spiritual doesn’t mean sacrificing masculinity, it’s actually the ultimate masculinity enhancer.
From taking action to seeking meaning and connection, the spiritual man is the kind of real man who’s equipped with the strength and conviction to explore, lead, and discover—qualities that so many struggle to find.
