Poet, Duncan Christy, writes sonnets to pay homage to the psychic cleaning, healing, joy, and energy of running.
The Good Men Project Sports asked Why We Run? In this series, we share your answers.
Below is Duncan Christy’s – in sonnet form, from his book The Running Sonnets.
“It purifies.” “Borne on some revelatory power.” “Realize what the psyche impels.”
“Thank God for its surprises.” “Unwilling to fail.” “Ability to fly.”
“Snaking through traffic.” “The track of his trials.”
We present three selections, in print, as well as audio of the author reading his poems.

“They are, if you will, the runners of poetry: lean, taut, intense, focused . . . 14-line poems that feature an arrangement of rhymes called a ‘scheme’ . . . . I wanted to make homage to the act which has brought me –and, I know, so many millions of people all over the world– so much pleasure, so much reassurance, so much psychic cleansing and healing. So much energy, so much confidence. Which has been, simply, an anchor, a salvation.”
