Shawn Maxam explains why anger can actually be a constructive and positive emotion especially for people with mood disorders .
Get mad, then get over it.
What do you do in an insensitive world where sometimes people treat you like dirt even when you’re kind to them? Conventional wisdom might give you some new age Deepak Chopra Kumbaya mumbo jumbo advice. Since I like to be an authentic human being and not someone trying to portray an infallible marketing machine persona I say you embrace your initial emotion: Anger!
I think in mood disorder circles that negative emotions often times get a bad wrap as if they aren’t apart of the human experience. Just because you have Bipolar or Depression doesn’t mean the world stops. People you love will die, spouses and bosses will yell at you and most people (who are unaware of your condition) will just be assholes. Now when such situations occur should the mentally ill person go into a Buddha-like-seance? I don’t think so. Being human whether you have a mood disorder or not is about managing your emotions not ignoring them or hiding them.
Never ever use you mental illness as an excuse to be mean or to treat other people like shit. Actually that advice goes for everyone but since some people are just douchebags they are gonna be jerks no matter the situation or context. It all comes back to personal responsibility. No matter the circumstances you make the choice on how you want to react to the world and treat other people.
Be the kind of person you want others to be to you. But you can still go and listen to some Tupac or Eminem for five mins and have a few not so happy thoughts from time to time. It’ll actually make you feel better.
What are your thoughts? I really like to hear from you on this one. How do you deal with “negative” emotions? Are you afraid that they’ll trigger you etc.?
