If the work is good, what does it matter? I’m doing it because I love it. Why not do as many things I love as I can? As long as the work is good.
-James Franco
While other folks actually pay James Franco to teach them stuff I just read his interviews and watch Spiderman 3 incessantly (jokes aside dude was amazing in 127 Hours).
Franco lives life to the fullest. Some may argue that he has much greater resources than the average person to achieve his dreams, goals etc. But stop being myopic folks. Are you maximizing your potential with whatever goals you do have? Life is short so the point of living is to be happy (or better yet content).
I recently realized that I’m not a box person. I prefer different shapes. I think what usually happens when we either become adults or even diagnosed with a mental illness is that we become limited in not just what we try to do but who try to be. I personally like to do a lot of shit. I’m actually quite good at this. Now maybe you only have one thing you’re really passionate about whereas for me I have about a dozen things.
These include 1) writing 2) blogging 3) furthering my education 4) creating music 5) making and watching films just to name a few.
Now will I ever become “successful” at any of those things? I have no idea and I don’t really care. If you want to live a full life than just do what you like. I wrote a book of poetry two years ago. I don’t need it to make the NY Times bestseller list because honestly I’m not trying to be the next Maya Angelou (who is obviously a million times better than me).
I know what my purpose in life is but that doesn’t mean I can never do anything else. I realize what keeps my moods stable is indulging as many aspects of my creative self as possible. And since I’m not doing many of these “hobbies” or passions professionally I don’t have any stressful deadlines to adhere to which keeps it light, fun and therapeutic which is the goddamn point.
You know how many people I know wanna learn how to play an instrument but quit a few weeks in? A LOT! Folks you will not become the next Jimi Hendrix (Heck Hendrix probably didn’t know he’d be who he has become). Stop trying so hard to be awesome and just have fun.
If James Franco doesn’t finish his three Ph.D programs who cares? Is there a law against multiple doctoral degrees? Wow a celebrity actually wants an education! Folks get mad because musicians and actors drop out of school but get mad when one pursues too much education-LOL! It’s just silly to get upset at others for doing what they want.
So over the next several years while I return to grad school I’ll probably release a book or two, compose some music, shoot a few short films, write more poetry, do a sketch comedy show and so forth. You can ride along with me. You can get your own car and start your own journey or you can be a spectator. The onus is on you.
Thank you James Franco. Now call up Bradley Cooper and y’all go make Limitless 2!
