You Win Some and You Lose Most (And That’s Okay)

Why do we fall, sir? So that we can learn to pick ourselves up.

-Alfred (Batman Begins)

People who are a part of my generation (the tail-end of Gen X and the beginning of the Millennial Generation) tend to let the ups and downs of life gravely affect their sense of self. Life can be unkind at times and even often cruel but we can emphasis the good things that happen to us or we can choose to wallow in the bad.

Make a list of the worst things you have ever experienced and then create a contrasting list of the best things. You will probably notice  sh*t doesn’t suck as much as you think. Congrats on being kinda awesome. You have survived and thrived before and you will again.

Check out my quick list below:

Failures, Set-backs and Regression:

Dissolution of first Marriage

Rejection from UPenn’s College of Liberal and Professional Studies

Medical leave and subsequent inability to finish graduate studies at Columbia’s Teacher’s College

Dropping-out of Canarsie High School

Bipolar Disorder diagnosis and subsequent hospitalizations

Successes, Triumphs and Progress:

Falling in love and re-marrying Chipmunk

Acceptance to Bryn Mawr’s School of Social Work and restarting graduate studies

Completing my G.E.D. and graduating college with a B.F.A.

Living five years in recovery with my mental illness

*Both of my list are sure to expand and I am happy that they will.

It’s hard to keep picking yourself up when everything keeps pushing you down. &it’s hard to keep picking yourself up when you keep letting everything keep pushing you down. It’s even harder to pick yourself back up, when it’s much easier just to stay down.

The great thing is that you are still here. It’s not easy and it’s often hard but it’s never impossible. I believe in you and I know you believe in yourself. Keep fighting.
