The common wisdom is that guys are pre-occupied with sending around cock shots a la a guy with the unfortunate name of Weiner.
New research would indicate that it’s not the guys who are using instant gratification to engage in electronic sexting.
According to a recent study by Diane Kholos Wysocki, a professor of sociology and women’s studies at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, and Cheryl D. Childers, a professor of sociology at Washburn University, women are more likely to send nude photographs or sexually explicit text messages than men. About two-thirds of women surveyed sent such missives compared with roughly half the men.
The research is far from scientific but the question remains, why do women feel the need to send guys naked pictures of themselves? Is this part of a male-dominated world where women are subjected to such acts of depravity or is this a new liberation where women are more in touch with their sexuality and just want to share? Is this free love or male collusion?
Let us know what you think. Do you sext? Why or why not?

Quite simply, women possess more physical beauty that is visually pleasing to men. It makes more sense that they would send more sexts because men are more likely to appreciate receiving one than the other way around. Not to say the male body is ugly. A topless shot of a guy is certainly not provocative but when it’s a woman, it takes the form of sexually explicit material.
I don’t have a defined answer to this question, but in my own opinion I feel that women feel less threatened by doing such an act. Women are in a sexuallypressuerd world and must compete on many levels in order to prove their worth to society. So in sexting pictures to men they do not feel compelled to pffer anything in return. They may feel a sense of erotic pleasure that they have turned o man on sexually witout engaging in any physical act of sex. The woman can act as if nothing has even happened and still have a… Read more »
Tom, speaking of double standards. I hope the TGMP will take a hard line on the female talkshows and their audiences that are seeing sexual torture and mutilation of men as a form or entertainment.
AJ which talkshows are you talking about? Happy to do a piece on that but need specifics.
Full details here Tom – https://noseriouslywhatabouttehmenz.wordpress.com/2011/07/17/cbs-we-are-not-amused/#more-914
AJ, I sent in a complaint form to CBS. I hope others will follow suit!
The answer to this question is multi-faceted. In our “hyper-sexualized” society, women may feel they must do that to “compete”. Every where we look, we have some form of sex in our faces. Internet pornography has exploded. More and more people use it…. not just men. Pornography harms. Men are supposedly not “big” enough– just look at all the Viagra, Cialis commercials…. and women can’t get enough plastic surgery. It seems, for some women, if you aren’t sexy enough, daring enough, “porn star” enough you won’t garner the attention of a man. I’m NOT one who sexts and I never… Read more »
There are plenty of people out there that enjoy exhibitionism and do it because they enjoy it. I sort of resent the constant depiction of women as agencyless bimbos that are programmed by external forces.
I would submit there are deep seeded issues to those who enjoy exhibitionism…but I won’t get into any argument with anyone who thinks otherwise. It takes a complete willingness to acknowledge the deeper issues for wanting to be an exhibitionist. Those in the throes of the behavior most oft can’t see the roots/cause of their behavior. There are much deeper issues… and a complete honesty is required. Thusly, studies, research, etc. into these activities are extremely difficult to perform. Pornography harms at deeper levels and in many, many ways. Whether or not they think they enjoy it doesn’t mean it’s… Read more »
Here is a blog page about sexual torture and mutilation as entertainment.

Absolutely revolting! Nothing at all funny about it. Nothing!
Here’s our response: #CBS is it really funny when I guy gets his penis cut off? Let’s get serious about gender respect in both directions http://bit.ly/pltlM3
Female behavior is not held to the same standards as male.
e.g. woman caught sexing by her partner and her partner is annoyed and ends the relationship, he is the one at fault, controlling and possessive and if she was cheating, it was because he was doing something wrong. Man gets caught, he is a pig/something akin to to a sex criminal/loses his job etc.
Tom, I think this is another example of “sexy headlines, skimpy science”, this time on the part of the NY Times (and Pamela Paul who wrote the article). Thank you for pointing out that the study was “far from scientific”. I agree. While her headline grabs attention, Paul then devotes half the article laying out the limitations of the study and cautioning that “these results are not the most scientific” and there are “major caveats”. Indeed, I have never seen so many qualifiers in a mainstream journalistic piece on academic research! Here are a few of those qualifiers, according to… Read more »
I agree. Just was kinda shocked that the NYT felt fit to publish. And then it became the most read article of the day. Shame on them and shame on us. But it does bring up the question of what role sexting plays, despite shabby science, in the way genders interact. I don’t think its just cock shots. But I also think the reasons women, and specially girls, send nude texts of themselves are a lot more complex and worthy of real examination.
