Tom Matlack relates to Clark Kellogg’s fatherly pride as the announcer watched his son advance to the Sweet Sixteen.
Clark Kellogg has always been March Madness to me. In the early 90s I had made the trip to Albany to watch my Umass squad featuring Marcus Camby in the first round. The most memorable part of that trip, well before I had kids, was being squeezed into a buddy’s living room between live game sessions to watch games from around the country and hear Clark’s trademark “Young Fella” and “Go to the Rack!”
Now as the father of a 15 year-old son who is an athlete I can relate to Clark’s pride when his son made it to the sweet 16. Like Clark, I’ve had to walk that fine line between enthusiasm and parental pressure. In the end you love you son no matter what the outcome. But when they do something remarkable in a sport you care about–in my case football and tennis and for Clark basketball–it’s one of those moments to the male emotions rip.
“Way to go young fella!”
Kellog’s reaction was just great.
