Famous Anti-Semite Turns Out to Be Jewish

If you wrote it in a movie, people would say, “Yeah right, like that’d ever happen.”

Well, it happened. Newser and the AP report:

As a rising star in Hungary’s far-right Jobbik Party, Csanad Szegedi was notorious for his incendiary comments on Jews: He accused them of “buying up” the country, railed about the “Jewishness” of the political elite, and claimed Jews were desecrating national symbols. Then came a revelation that knocked him off his perch as ultra-nationalist standard-bearer: Szegedi himself is a Jew.

Szegedi claims that he didn’t know he was part Jewish until someone tried to blackmail him. A recording surfaced of the politician trying to pay the guy off. Since then, Szegedi’s been rejected by all those anti-Semites who once held him in their esteem:

Szegedi resigned last month from all party positions and gave up his Jobbik membership. That wasn’t good enough for the party: Last week it asked him to give up his seat in the European Parliament as well.

What do you think will become of Szegedi? Will this make him more of a hateful bigot (full of self-loating)? Or soften the politician toward his ancestors – who survived Auschwitz and the forced labor camps?
