  1. Actually, not all the Village People were gay.

    • andrew smiler says:

huh. didn’t know that. I just remembered the “controversy” from when they first appeared on the music scene.

      • They were meant as kind of a gay KISS, representing broad stereotypes/archetypes. At the very least the construction worker, the cop and the leather man were straight. (the only one I know for sure is gay is Felipe Rose, aka the indian)

    • courage the cowardly dog says:

which ones do you claim weren’t gay. They were named “The Village People” after the largely Gay section of Manhattan known as “Greenwich Village”. I call BS on that — they were all gay.

  2. Mark Ellis says:

Bravo, Andrew, lots of wonderful music was engendered by your call for an anthem. Glad we hooked up on “My Way.” I still get chills.

    • andrew smiler says:

Thanks Mark. And yeah, My way is an amazing tune. I’ll also add a shout out to Jamie Reidy, who said same thing backchannel.

  3. im glad to see my nomination for survivor made it to the top ten :)

  4. I definitely love the Frank Sinatra and would also suggest “It Was A Good Year” by him. Geez, Frank Sinatra and The Rat Pack…total male anthems!

Also Gary Glitter “Do You Wanna Touch” (but maybe that’s just me).

  5. courage the cowardly dog says:

“YMCA”? Really? Please. That is a gay anthem, not a real man’s anthem. How about “Glory Days” by Bruce Springsteen. Or “I walk the line” by Johnny Cash.

  6. courage the cowardly dog says:

I would also nominate Jimmy Buffett’s “Why don’t we get drunk and screw” as another one.

  7. Glad to see Mannish Boy/I’m a Man made the list. Disapointed that James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s World” did not make the cut.
