Watch Endgame: AIDS in Black America on PBS. See more from FRONTLINE.
Think you know what the face of HIV looks like? You don’t. Think it’s a disease that’s dying off? It’s not. AIDS is alive and thriving.
ENDGAME: AIDS in Black America is a breathtaking, heart wrenching, and somehow also hopeful documentary from PBS and Frontline. Beautiful stories of men and women everyone can relate to: The woman in the pew next to you in church, your best friend, the basketball superstar, a child who is a “Borny” – born with HIV. These are the faces of HIV and AIDS.
Frontline’s ENDGAME explores how a disease that heterosexual America thinks has nothing to do with them is taking on a new life. Children are still being born HIV positive, the babies who were born HIV positive in the early nineties are becoming adults, faithful partners of HIV positive individuals are contracting the disease.
Drugs are still a massive problem, and in many places clean needle exchanges are still illegal.
Regardless of your race or sexual orientation, you simply must watch this breathtaking documentary. There is hope, but action is needed, and we must all learn more about how this disease is gaining new power.
ENDGAME is available for free, in its entirely, online at PBS.org
I work with youth with HIV. The majority of them are black. Some people ask me about this, and I always lie. I hate the stereotype that it’s a disease black people get. Am I just hiding it by lying though? I’m not sure what the answer is here.
I understand your trepidation about perpetuating certain stereotypes about Black people but if people are contracting the disease due to lack of awareness and education then we have to be truthful in my opinion.
Also anyone who is going to be judgmental about a pandemic then I don’t think they’re compassionate individuals and I would advise you disregard their opinion. You are being a change-agent by doing the work you do. That is what is important. I want to thank you for that.
