This “infographic” borders on propaganda in terms of truthfulness and actual information conveyed.
For example, the claim that “these companies” primarily avoided taxes through foreign tax shelters is demonstrably false.
One of the companies described above is Google. A 2-second internet search reveals that Google’s primary method of tax avoidance is actually racking up green energy credits:
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-07-08/google-profits-from-tax-credit-to-boost-750-million-energy-plan.html
If you offer companies tax breaks for clean energy investment, and then they make those clean energy investments in order to take advantage of the tax break…wasn’t that the point in the first place? To blatantly mischaracterize what happened is irresponsible.
But more fundamentally, let’s consider the argument that was repeatedly bandied about by progressives attacking Mitt Romney: these companies pay ALL KINDS of other taxes. Their effective income tax rates being low doesn’t keep them from paying for unemployment insurance, or making social security payments. Payroll taxes are also taken out of the “back end” such that companies are forced to pay them even though they don’t show up as deductions on employee paychecks.
So if you buy the argument that the 47% still pays taxes, hate to tell you this, but these companies still pay taxes too.
So is this infographic promoting Mitt Romney’s logic, or is it just wrong?
