Eli Kaplan asserts that almost everyone he knows is prejudiced. And he knows a lot of people.
So, ABC’s The Bachelor show is being sued for being racist. Hmmm…
Why is this a shock? Most people are prejudiced, and thus most corporations, companies, etc… are prejudiced. Whites, blacks, Asians, Hispanics, Catholics, Christians, Jews, Muslims, rich, poor, dumb, smart—all sorts of people are prejudiced.
Most of us wish to be good people, and we understand prejudice (or even worse, racism) is bad. Many of us even act and speak out (sincerely) against discriminatory behavior. But those good talks and actions don’t erase our inner-most thoughts. And the sad truth is, most people are prejudice, and our society is racist.
Does “The Bachelor” appeal to a lilly-white audience? Of course it does. It’s a show on ABC! Have you watched ABC recently? This is no big surprise. If you don’t want to watch all those white people make fools of themselves, you can change the channel. By doing so, you’ll be making an active decision to not support the ABC/The Bachelor agenda. Instead, turn your TV to VH1, and you can see minorities make complete fools of themselves on Basketball Wives.
Is one show more (or less) worthwhile than the other? In my eyes they’re both abominations. Networks are equal opportunists when it comes to creating trash.
People aren’t nearly as liberal or open-minded as they like to pretend they are. Isn’t it a contestant’s prerogative to ask for a cast full of non-minorities? If he’s not interested in marrying anyone who isn’t white, that’s his decision. It’s not my personal choice, but it can certainly be his. We are a segregated society and world. People stick mostly with their own race in all facets of life – school, business, socially, romantically, and in prison too. So let’s have a minority be the next “bachelor”. When that contestant is black, will everyone complain that mostly the whole cast is black? When that contestant is Asian, and the cast is mostly Asian? When that contestant is gay, will everyone complain that the entire cast is… gay?!? Or will ABC buck stereotypes and create an interracial cast?
Come on America, cool it with the complaints (about anything)! It’s true, complaints bring attention, attention brings awareness, and awareness can bring change. But we have to pick our battles, or our voice loses its power. Believe me, there are other racial injustices we can fight against. Have you been watching the news or reading the newspapers lately?
But for now, take it easy with the class-action lawsuits. We’re talking trashy TV shows here. We’re talking reality shows, not reality. If you wanted to get really real, you REALLY wouldn’t like what you saw. The shows would be full of real discriminatory banter—they’d be un-airable—because this nation is prejudiced. Instead we create a fake “reality” and pretend that’s how the world actually is.
And if that’s what you want, keep living that lie.
