Joss Whedon’s ‘Firefly’ to Return to TV

Okay, don’t get too excited… It’s just for a TV special marking the 10 year anniversary of Firefly. But for those of us who were fanatical about the Scifi-Western TV series from a decade ago, and the subsequent feature film, Serenity, any morsel of Whedon and the Browncoats is like manna from heaven.

Entertainment Weekly reports:

The special — titled Browncoats Unite — will include footage from Friday’s reunion panel, featuring several members of the original team including star Nathan Fillion and creator Joss Whedon. Plus, the cast is shooting an in-depth behind-the-scenes roundtable interview that will dive deeper into burning fan questions about the beloved series…

In addition to Whedon and Fillion, Friday’s 12:30 p.m. Comic-Con panel will feature Alan Tudyk, Summer Glau, Adam Baldwin, Sean Maher, showrunner Tim Minear, and writer Jose Molina. The special, produced by Pangolin Pictures, promises to unearth defining memories and first-person accounts of making the show from both sides of the camera. Browncoats Unite will air on Science, along with an all-day marathon of Firefly episodes, on Sunday, Nov. 11.

Not a Firefly fan yet? Not to fear, you have lots of time to catch up. Think you don’t like SciFi? Give Firefly a shot. I had never cared about, let alone been fanatical over anything related to SciFi before Firefly debuted. There’s just something special about it.

For those of you who already identify as Firefly fans, what do you think of the ways in which gender played out on the series and in the film?

Do you think there could ever be a second Serenity film?

Joanna…you are an evil woman for playing with my emotions like that. lol.

I would really, really love a new Serenity movie…I think. I dunno what it’d be like after the thing that happened at the end of the first movie…that I won’t go into in case anyone who hasn’t seen it yet is reading this… :)

  2. Danny says:

Yeah if Firefly was really returning to tv the vast majority of the internet would be flipping the fuck out over it (like I think the internet itself would not be able to handle it).

But I’ll take what I can get.

Do you think there could ever be a second Serenity film?
Only on the condition that it’s a retcon of what happened in the first film. There were two major events in that film that would wreck any hopes of there being a second movie along that storyline.

    • Mark Neil says:

I think one is the same event Heather mentioned. Is the other Mal’s motivation/inspiration for decorating Serenity?

      • Joanna Schroeder says:

Okay I agree, that the event at the end would make it hard to go on… That particular thing that was lost was by far my favorite part of the entire series (as I tweeted) and film. Love love love.

Decorating Serenity? I can’t remember that!!

I honestly do think they could make another. Everything except the aforementioned one thing could be worked with, right???

        • HeatherN says:

Well…I think the other think is kind of similar to the thing I mentioned…sort of…

If you saw the Serentiy outtakes…it’s the “hood ornament.” ;)

    • Joanna Schroeder says:

      What’s a retcon?

      • HeatherN says:

Like…re-do it and pretend that the first movie didn’t happen. It could have been like, before Serenity or something.

      • Copyleft says:

Short for “retroactive continuity,” a decision to alter the established history of the series or show. It came from comic books first, I believe, where they often have to “re-do” a hero’s origin or at least update it to modern times.

never been a fan of Firefly, simply it didnt hit my taste. Sorry. But personal likes aside, I loved the quality of the show. I mean confronted to the general mediocrity of modern TV Firefly surely was a like a clean breath of air. Even if it never hit me personally. But if it comes back I hope they keep the quality :-)

On a side note, a new X-Files or Stargate Atlantis, will make me really happy :-D
