In an interview with the Ron and Don Show’s Rachel Belle, Good Men Project Magazine editor Kevin Lincoln discussed mangagement rings, bromance, and other instances of masculating otherwise ungendered language.
Describing the root of this “bronacular,” as Belle put it, Lincoln said, “It’s led to this sort of insecurity among men where they feel like they need to over-masculate everything to ensure that nobody thinks they’re compromising their masculinity or trending too far in the female direction.”
On whether there are similar words for women doing traditionally manly things: “The difference is: when a man does something that a woman traditionally does, like get a manicure or a pedicure, you almost try and make it funny and distance yourself from it a little bit. But when women do it, they’ve got to own it, because if they don’t own it, people are gonna get on them about it and there’s more of a chance that she’s gonna be called a lesbian or manly.”
