Gun control advocates praised the bill, with some saying they were amazed at how far it went.
Connecticut lawmakers have agreed on what many are calling “the nation’s strongest gun control bill.” According to the New York Times the bipartisan package,
[I]includes universal background checks for firearm sales, new state-issued eligibility certificates for the purchase of any rifle, shotgun, or ammunition, and a ban on future sales of high-capacity magazines … [It] also strengthens the state’s existing ban on semiautomatic assault rifles.
The entire package is expected to pass both the Connecticut House and Senate without any problems sometime this week, and Reuters reports that lawmakers from both parties explained that after the Sand Hook Elementary School shooting they realized “the issue had moved beyond partisan politics.”
