Ron Cowie thinks this whole birth control thing is pretty obvious.
- Women need sperm to fertilize their egg; which starts the baby making process.
- There is more sex happening than there are babies being born.
- This is true all over the world.
- Sex is the most fun activity life has to offer.
- Children are cool, but the more you have the less sex you get. Children are exhausting.
- Having a few children and more sex seems to work for most families.
- Using science to achieve this makes sense.
- It is a good use of taxpayer or insurance money since people use it to be happy and create peace.
- Anal isn’t always on the menu.

#9 made me laugh harder than it probably should have.
I pretty much just loved this article. It was perfect and concise.
“Anal” is always funny. This is why I can never take anti-gay groups seriously when they start going on about the “gay sex act.” As if there were only one.
#10. Pay for it out of your own pocket not someone elses, just like you would healthy leafy green vegetables.
Agree with all but 4 and 8, hot stuff.
That is what makes horse races interesting…variety. Thanks.
1. Agree 2. Agree 3. Not so sure this is true, there maybe some cultures it is not true (and don’t you claim to know all the cultures of the world) 4. Sex is more appropriately described as fulfilling and/or enjoyable– fun seems like a less mature term 5a Children are more than cool, they are miraculous; b. not necessarily true if you plan well and utilize your time appropriately and c. while children may be exhausting they are certainly worth it. 6. Yes it works for selfish narcissitic people, but not everybody and certainly not true for many people… Read more »
Regarding #6, people who have lots of children also have high infant mortality. This is very consistently true — as far as I know, the only exceptions are small groups of high-birthrate folks surrounded by low-birthrate folks — like traditional Catholics in the US — who can routinely bear nine children and have them all live to grow up because the wealth of the larger, low-birthrate society supports them. Now, some folks believe that it’s morally better to go ahead and have nine children and watch a couple of them die and then lose your wife to puerperal fever, because… Read more »
For this to work, I’m assuming, rather foolishly, that sex occurs between two consenting adults in a committed relationship.
If you’re going to “hit the town” wear a rubber for God’s sake.
Better yet, read a good book and stay home!
What do you mean by “committed”? Until you ejaculate, for the night, for the weekend, until someone with a hotter body comes along or for a lifetime no matter what, publicly declared and legally binding. If it is this last definition, then I agree with you.
Badman, because until the last 50 years we needed to keep the sperm from the egg, which meant-condom, ejaculate out side the body, don’t have sex. Now we have the BC pill and other things and SHOULD have a pill for men so the sperm isn’t an issue. BUT besides sperm meets egg, we need to deal with STD’s and condoms are great for that.
The points apply to male BC pills too.
I know that equality sucks and being treated like a man isn’t so much fun but that’s the way it is for men.
Keep it in your pants or wear a condom. That’s equality for women.
Why so hostile when I’m advocating more options for men? I’m advocating getting laid safely for all sexes. Not sure what the problem wIth that is.
yeah, i’m unclear what the problem is, too?
if we think there should be better BC options for men, what are we saying wrong?
You support Obamacare. That is like a white person who supports Jim Crow telling a black person “I want you to have a better life, what are you complaining about?”
Obamacare is institutionalized prejudice against men, boys, and fathers on a horrific scale. You either reject it, or you are no friend of men.
Julie, I am loathe to speak for another, but I’d like to try and clarify the point I think Badman is making. Your argument seems to be that you (and others) can simply show up and say “But we think men should have better options too!” and this will somehow erase decades of gender disparity with respect to reproductive rights which has caused very real suffering among some men (I’m reminded of the man who took out a billboard to protest his girlfriend’s decision to get an abortion without consulting him; like his idea or not, you cannot deny the… Read more »
So Mike, I’m really interested in your vision of a future where men have more say in issues of reproductive rights?
How does birth control change? Abortion, etc?
I hear men say all the time that they resent women for having all the power in this arena, but I’ve never really seen a great “ideal” vision for the future as far as men’s hopes in this.
Abortion: Men want male abortion. A man can surrender all paternity rights, and all responsibilities, for a period of 2 months after learning of the pregnancy. The same amount of time that women have after their first missed period.
Birth Control: Men want massive government funding for research into a discreet, private male birth control option.
Paternity: Men want a halt to the feminis. campaign to make paternity testing illegal. We want paternity testint done on all infants at birth, along with all other genetic tests, unless both parents specifically request an exemption.
Anthony,
I agree with your first paragraph.
Paragraph 2: No. I want the government out of it. Get them out of birth control coverage altogether.
Paragraph 3: Agree, sort of. Making it mandatory at birth may be an overreach for government. But, make it mandatory before a support order is put in place. There, there should be no exemptions, regardless of whether or not it is requested.
My two cents.

I see what you’re saying about mandatory paternity tests, but the thing is… if it is mandatory then it removes the “what, don’t you trust me??” stigma against getting one. And the fact of the matter is, women cheat too. Mandatory paternity tests would put an end to the disgusting “just don’t tell ‘daddy'” situations that crop up occasionally.
Joanna, You’ve made a mistake in believing that I agree with Badman. I empathize with his position, but that doesn’t mean I agree. In previous posts you and Julie have repeatedly asked individuals not to minimize the suffering of others. In the series that NikkiB and Simone are running on their blogs under the title “Project X” a recurrent theme is the need to recognize that ignoring someone because they are angry is a form of privilege: you are privileged to ignore a topic because it does not anger you the way it angers others. The current piece by on… Read more »

So, yeah I think that people need to have a place to vent their anger. But we also have to recognize that… Read more »
I just wanted to know where the hostile tone was coming from for that particular post. And at me. I get being angry in general and saying, hey Julie I”m angry about these topics and when I read you saying this I have this response, could you clarify. But hostility flat out…well it doesn’t make much sense to me. Like, I could be a total asshole to people on threads but it wouldn’t really do anyone any good. Maybe I’d feel good for about 60 seconds. I don’t want anyone to stop being angry, but I don’t think that I… Read more »
Standard response given to men:
Keep it in your pants or wear a condom if you don’t want to have a baby.
Sigh. Just read it. Read Obamacare, and then come back and post something intelligent. It will not take as long as you think. Six hours, tops, cover to cover. It is 907 pages long, but written in ridiculously huge font, so you can get through it in double time. You can find a text version of the document at Open Congress: http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-h3590/text To see the document in original reproduction, including original font, try Kaiser Health (google Kaiser Health affordable care act full text). Six articles in a row written by six people who DID NOT READ THE BILL is just… Read more »
