Open Thread: Has There Ever Been a Great Movie Sequel?

Open discussion:

Yesterday we talked about the possibility of a second sequel to the legendary film Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, and how crappy Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey was.

The question is this: Are there any films where the sequel is at least as good as, if not better than, the original?

Need some hints: Check out EW’s list of the worst sequels ever made, where you can learn about sequels you didn’t even know existed, like Teen Wolf Too, Porky’s 2 and Caddyshack 2.

Really? Have you guys at GMP taken leave of your senses?
I hope these aren’t too obscure for you, but Star Wars had sequel called The Empire Strikes Back. It was decent.
And Christopher Nolan had a decent couple of films, too. The Dark Knight was a pretty good sequel to Inception.

  6. Godfather: Part II

    X-Men 2
    Indie Jones: The Last Crusade
Tron:Legacy (if only for the soundtrack)

Some of these I don’t think of as true sequels, like The Godfather series, because they were books first and the objective was probably always to have a series.

I’m sure someone who knows more of the history of Star Wars will correct me here, but… I assume Lucas had planned the trilogy in advance? If not, then yeah, obv Empire is an awesome sequel.

Toy Story, every single one of them, scared the living shit out of me. As far as kids’ movies go, I’d say Madagascar 2 is better than Madagascar 1. But that’s just me ;)

Oh and Last Crusade is really good!

Yeah Star Wars was a planned story. Empire Strikes Back, IMO, isn’t a sequel so much as a continuation.

I personally have an indicator to determine if something is a sequel or a continuing story.

“Could the first movie have stood alone?”

If not then it’s likely a continuing story.
If so then it’s likely a sequel.

Mind you this is not 100% perfect.

Lucas did not, in fact, originally plan a Star Wars trilogy. He first imagined a direct sequel, called Splinter in the Mind’s Eye, that could be done on a small budget should Star Wars prove a box office failure. Only after its success were Empire and Jedi greenlit, and the OT, as we know it, was created.

This question really is absurd. There’s a ton of great sequels out there that were better than the original – to name a few off the top of my head:
        - Terminator 2
        - The Bourne Supremacy
        - Spider-man 2
        - The Dark Knight
        - From Russia with Love
        - X-Men 2
        - Before Sunset

          Hold onto that absurdity!

I do read the question/issue as “when has the squeal been better than the antecedent…. and better is highly subjective! I do Monty Python (call it therapy) and so I have to wonder how do I judge progression and sequel!

          1) The Holy Grail
          2) Life Of Brian
          3) The Meaning of Life

          Before Sunset!?!?!

          Talk about absurdity!! ;)

        • Danny says:

Ah memory jogged. You are correct. At the time Lucas was basically biting his nails in fear of how well the first movie would do.

Lucas did not, in fact, originally plan a Star Wars trilogy. He first imagined a direct sequel, called Splinter in the Mind’s Eye, that could be done on a small budget should Star Wars prove a box office failure.
That’s not good. I’ve read Splinter in the Mind’s Eye and from what I recall it would not have rounded out the story.

Fun fact. According to one of the godzillion documentaries on the series, when Star Wars was getting shopped around back in 77 some theaters wouldn’t even play it, thinking it was going to bomb. And I believe that some theaters even went as far to tell Lucas that they would only take Star Wars as part of a package deal with another movie or something like that. As in they had to offer up a “good movie” and tack Star Wars onto it. Honestly I don’t know what the name of that other movie was so that goes to show how history is written by the winners.

    Back to the Future II

  12. Laura says:

Star Trek 2 was better than the first one

  13. Tyler says:

For a Few Dollars More, and then The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
    The Color of Money
From Russia with Love, and then Goldfinger

    Others have been mentioned above.

And at the other end of the spectrum, Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2 is not worse than Baby Geniuses, therefore it qualifies as an equal or better movie than it’s original. Set the bar low enough and everything starts looking good.

  14. Danny says:

The Police Academy movies up until the 4th (2, 3, and 4) one.

Seriously screw all the other ones after the 4th. Well 6 was decent but the magic was gone and it was clear that 4 marked the series downward turn.

    Kung-fu Panda 2

  16. Noah Brand says:

    Bride of Frankenstein.

    Brazil!
Okay, technically it’s not a sequel, but it is so much better than Time Bandits.
