What do you think of this role-swap?

Does it break down stereotypes or perpetuate them?

Is it funny?

  1. Stereotypes… about adults? Because my previous model for this meme was to take your kids to work. I realize I’m getting old and unhip and may have missed a few iterations. Take Someone of the Opposite Sex to Work Day, for instance: never heard of it, pretty sure I just made it up.

I’m thinking stereotypes about women. I think she comes off as REALLY cute and lovable, and the type of girl I thought I would like to be when I was about thirteen.

But she also comes off really dumb and annoying. And even when she’s at work with them, they still don’t seem as dumb as she does.

      Thoughts?

      • Yeah, she comes off as a “type.” So do the guys. They’re all okay, I guess. Not wicked smart outside their own realms, but with their own ways of connecting with other people. They all behaved respectfully of one another. It wasn’t super funny. Not sure what it was aiming for, unless it was to point out that both lines of work require some kind of ramp-up and knowledge. Pro athletes and supermodels are both stereotyped as “not that bright.” Did this uphold that? Maybe, in the way Harold & Kumar uphold some stereotypes by playing off them. Some of what’s funny is true, some of what’s funny is blatantly false.

Yeah, I thought they came back sort of as stereotypical men for sure, too. “She sure looked good” or whatever.

To me, Kate’s character was meant to be completely oblivious to her stupidity. She’s just a blonde, bimbo, model who doesn’t know anything…and doesn’t even realize when she’s being ridiculous. The two guys, though, come across as totally knowing that they’re screwing around. They aren’t stupid, so much as they’re just pranksters. Heck, even the in the out-takes Kate’s all giggly and silly.

So what’s this saying? Women are stupid and men are children? Something like that…oo lovely. Ugh.

  3. Peter Houlihan says:

    Yeah, I’m kindof with heather.
