Some said Bill Clinton’s speech was too long last night, but it flew by for me, and reminded me why I crossed party lines to vote for him in 1992. How could one not praise Michele Obama’s speech tonight? It was superb. I was like, I know people saw Hilary Clinton as presidential material from her days running for New York senator. Tonight was the first time I saw Michele Obama in the driver’s seat in the future! Michele Obama = grace, class, original, inspirational! Favourite line from Michele Obama’s speech last night: “Being president doesn’t change who you are. … It reveals who you are.”
I love Michelle Obama and thought her speech was masterful, inspiring, and illustrated progressive values. But I was seriously bummed out by the invocations of regressive gender roles for both women and men — i.e., her most important role is Mom-In-Chief; and even more toxic, the Success Myth: that the measure of a man is his ability to provide financially.
I totally get what you are saying. But her job at this time, like it or not, is to be a supportive wife to her husband and to be a mom. I am the guardian of my niece and nephew. Like it or not I am their, parental figure-in-chief. She could talk about her accomplishments but America is not looking for a co-president. Plus we already know how smart she is.
