I met a “good” man over a work-related schmoozing dinner…he was well-spoken, professional, energetic, and, oh so passionate about his work…he praised his colleagues, both men and women, for their intelligence and courage…he acknowledged prejudice and difficulties in his everyday dealings but he did not let that stop him on his mission to do good in the world…in fact, I would say he is a great man because he is an expert in his field but would never call himself a “great man”…his work is dedicated to those who can’t help themselves and while he recognizes their weaknesses, he also sees their courage and strength…perhaps I should say he was a wonderful man because he graciously excused himself from the table so he could get home to his wife and 2 kids before it got too late…To me, a good man is thinking about others, his family, his colleagues, and his friends…he knows how to prioritize the important people in his life and thinks about how his words and actions impacts them either negatively or positively….he is careful not to hurt the feelings of the people closest to him…he gives of himself not just because of duty but because he enjoys giving…
We have to first figure out what the purpose of life could possibly be; it will then be easier to recognize good.
