Open Thread: What One Thing In Your Past Would You Change?

Open Discussion:

A life well-lived is filled with mistakes. Some result in great things, some result in a lot of pain but help us grow. Other mistakes we simply wish we’d never made.

What one mistake in your past would you change, and why?

Are there mistakes in your past that were painful, but that you’re glad you made?

Not hitting my bullies. A good smackdown early on would have saved me a lot of pain, I only realized this near the end of highschool and surprise surprise hitting back stopped it.

Not telling my parents about the sexual harassment that was happening to me in school and how the boys made my life miserable in grade school. I should have told them and not kept it to myself.

Not staying in a spiritually abusive church. Probably would’ve saved my marriage if I had left and sought help.

Talking marriage and future with my girlfriend in college before I was ready to make good on those promises (or really was even mature enough to understand the gravity of them). It was fun and romantic while we were together, but she committed to those premature talks of marriage like they were vows, and when we broke up it was painful for her as a divorce, and it really crushed her. Words are easy to say, futures are easy to dream up, but a broken heart is a terrible price to pay for the sake of romance. I will always feel sorry for the pain I caused her.
