Opposition leader Henrique Capriles said, “We are not going to ignore the will of the people. We believe we won.”
Venezuelan citizens turned out en-mass to protest the decision by electoral authorities not to recount the results of the presidential election, despite the slender margin of victory given to Nicolas Maduro. According to Reuters, opposition leader Henrique Capriles has called for more protests from his supporters, insisting that he, not Hugo Chavez’s “anointed heir,” is the real winner. He claims that his party wants this “problem resolved peacefully,” but that there was not a majority, and therefore Maduro could not have won. Government officials have agreed to do an “audit of the electronic counting system,” but refuses to recount the votes manually.
