Image Pussy Riot
An all female punk band–the self proclaimed “Pussy Riot”–is taking Russia by storm as they protest the treatment of women, specifically proposed restrictions on legal abortions, ahead of the March 4th election. They recently performed in Red Square, getting briefly arrested, while creating a video that quickly went viral in support of their cause.
I don’t know about you but I love everything about this–the courage, the punk music, the outrage at the treatment of women, the crazy outfits, the use of viral video. Apparently the word “pussy” has a more gentle meaning in Russian. But the group is well aware of it’s meaning in english and embraces it. The members liked the tension between that word, and the rudeness and aggression of the word “riot.”
Their big hits are “Putin Got Scared” (politely translated) which they performed in Red Square (below and above) and “Death To Prison, Freedom To Protest” which they performed on the roof a garage next to a prison where other protesters were being held.
Awesome. F#$*ing awesome. Good Men Project seal of approval and standing ovation.

I thought from reading Russia this would be a protest against the domestic violence that prevails there.
And the blatant misogyny, the domestic exploitation and feminist bashing, among other things.
You gotta start somewhere.
Yeah, go girls!!!
Now, those are feminists that have real issues to complain about.
Hmm. How about we start a band called Cocks for Peace?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report “Differences in the life expectancies of the sexes in various countries in the world”, there is a tiny island-nation called “Niue”, population 1398, where the difference in life expectancy between men and women is 14 years.
Next in line is Russia, where men live (on average) 61.8 miserable years of forced labour and deprivation. In comparison, Russian women enjoy 74.2 years of lavish state support, notably an automatic payment of 250,000 rubles (about $9,200) for having a child.
In “Women: Victims of Men’s Shorter Life Span” the WHO explains why these very high rates of disease and death of men “must be presented as a serious impediment to women’s happiness”. Apparently, Russian women don’t like it when their male serfs die too early.
Clearly, Russian men are choosing to perish of cancer, heart disease, and liver failure in an intentional anti-feminist campaign to oppress women. These Russian men are savage barbarians, to die off so quickly, before serving their full utility to women!
Anthony, have you been to Russia? If you had, you would know that divorce is rampant, as is alcoholism and a general sense of misogyny. Meanwhile, there is a disproportionately large population of single mothers whose spouses left them alone with children and no alimony. “Lavish state support” is a pathetic statement coming from the west. Retirees receive paltry sums from the state that can barely cover rent, let alone food, utilities and other daily expenses. Thus, you will often find these 72.4-year old women working back-breaking, menial jobs with tiny salaries or hunched on a cold street begging for money to make-up for this difference. Russian provincial life is tough for men and women alike, but you can’t blame women from a culture you obviously have never visited for complaining. Russian women bear almost 100% of childcare as well as working long hours every day outside of the home. There are many wonderful, supporting Russian men, but there is also way less of an understanding of “equal rights” for gender over there and as a result there’s a lot of domestic abuse (as someone above mentioned)….So yeah…i take issue with your comment.
This isn’t the Good Cock Project is it?
Why do women’s “movements” have to be crude to be cool? Save the TaTa’s. I love Boobs. SlutWalk. PussyRiot.
Vagina Monologues and Bitch in the House book titles are starting to sound borning.
And we’re fully expessed and “liberated” when we let our tits hang out so the world wrestle with the power of our cleavage. We can play sports in our lingerie – GO GIRLS!
It’s cool for free women to openly talk about fucking who we want, when we want and provide extensive detail on why we want to. Men love it. Women cheer it.
Creeps me out, personally. I’m not impressed or intimidated by your rack, ladies.
I wholeheartedly support women’s equality but I guess I’m too nerdy or modest or unhip to enjoy the vulgarity. As woman, I’d prefer to be involved in something dignified. I’d prefer more respect not less. Maybe that’s why I don’t refer to myself that way. I guess the burden is on me to get comfortable with the idea that I don’t get the coolness of vulgarity. Oh wait – maybe vulgarity has changed it’s definition.
I do agree that women in Russia are oppressed. Women should wear what they want, yes. No one invites rape, period. I can care about women, but I don’t care for the shock approach. I actually find it more degrading. They’re women, not pussy.
And just like the old school guys locker room – if you’re not bragging about the size of your goods or who you fuck, you must be frigid or gay or something. Nope. I’m pretty damn happy with my body, my looks and my sexuality – I’m healthier than most. I don’t need to affirm it to everyone.
