Tom and Katie Divorcing – What Makes Celeb Marriages So Doomed?

If you don’t know who Tom and Katie are, man do I envy you!

It’s hard to escape this pop news cycle, so you’ve probably seen clips Tom Cruise going bananas on Oprah’s couch screaming (I’m paraphrasing here)”Katie! Kate! I LOVE Katie!” And you may have thought, “This’ll never last.” Or maybe you thought, “I don’t give a crap.” Either way, you’re pretty normal I’d guess.

Lots of people would say that the age difference between the two doomed them from the start. Cruise is 16 years older than Holmes.

The saddest news is that Katie Holmes is allegedly suing for full custody of little Suri, according to TMZ. Sad because either a father is being threatened with losing his rights, or if it’s justified, something has been very wrong in their family. Either way, it’s tragic for the child.

What, if anything do you think this divorce says about society, and marriage, as a whole?

How about this age difference? Does it doom a marriage?

That many people change over time, grow apart, some are not suited to be monogymous, lives can be very busy and it seems for some life is just getting even more crammed by us trying to do too much without spending enough time together.

There are plenty of celebrity marriages that seem to work fine, Hugh Jackman for instance.

2 Corinthians 6 talks about being unequally yoked. I think the biggest problem in their relationship is their difference in religious beliefs. Katie, a devout Catholic marries Tom, a devout Scientologist. I’m saddened by the whole thing because I’m such a fan of the two of them. And even though he is 17 years her senior, I hoped they would make it work. But since the beginning, I had a feeling that the death of their marriage would be their difference in religious beliefs. Katie doesn’t want Suri to be associated with the Church of Scientology, she wants her to grow up Catholic. For good reason. I’ve prayed for them a lot of the years and I will continue to pray for them. Even more now than ever.

Divorce has invaded our society. I can name countless people I know personally who have been affected by a divorce. And have seen how it’s influenced their lives. As a young, single woman who wants to get married, it’s something I pray I never have to go through. Not so much for my sake, but for my future children’s sake. Society has lost sight of marriage because we’ve lost sight of God.

There’s a 13 year age difference between Hugh and Deborra-Lee. I love that you brought them up. I pray for them regularly too. Who am I kidding? I pray for a lot of celebrities regularly. Denzel has been married for more than 20 years. Mark Harmon and Pam Dawber reached the 25 year mark this year. Meryl Streep has been married for 30+ years. I can certainly keep going with a list of celebrities who have a very successful marriage. And when you get down to it, the biggest thing they have in common with their spouse is their religious beliefs.
