“I drank a Busch beer while watching a porno movie for the first time. The irony was lost on me until now.”
My head ground to a halt at number 1.
How is it ironic?
Drinking Busch in a can while watching porno ( with lots of bush and cans).
Both things are used to relax but turned out to be less than satisfying.
I don’t know if that makes it ironic, but I think so.
I may be humorless, but I don’t think that any sex-workers deserve to be treated like a piece of meat and I think they have every right to be offended if people treat them like one.
Deserve has nothing to do with it. If you are working in the sex entertainment industry you have made your body a commodity. If being treated as such is an issue, it might be time to pursue another career. This isn’t to suggest that sex workers forfeit their right to be treated with respect, dignity and professionalism; but run a greater chance of it being overlooked. Treating someone as less valuable because of gender is a subtle form of violence in the sense that it suggests that one gender has more value in a work environment. I was writing a… Read more »
Well, to me the statement that they shouldn’t get offended when they are treated as a piece of meat reads very differently than the statement that they run a greater chance of being seen as one. In fact saying they shouldn’t get offended do indeed suggest that they should forfeit their right to be treated as human beings. You could’ve written that they shouldn’t be surprised if they are treated as a piece of meat – that would be more in line with your clarification in your comment. Any career makes one’s body and/or mind a commodity within the context… Read more »
You’re right on both points.
True…I ended up glossing right over that trying to figure out the rest.
You neither?
Personally, I try to never where pants when I’m on this site. Never.
Haha – never would have known…if you hadn’t told us
Well, not all participants in the porno industry are forced but the increasing demand creates a pressure on the willing talent pool.
Unequal pay for the same work is not the same thing as getting beaten with a bag of oranges.
While this is a serious subject, we can have a little lightness about the discourse.
I’m not wearing any pants.
And yeah we can have a light discourse….but we still gotta be clear. I still don’t get it…what did you mean when you said ‘unequal pay?’
Incidentally, I am wearing pants.
Well then please explain this
“There are a whole slew of socially acceptable things that are just as violent towards women. Unequal pay is the first one that comes to mind. ”
Even assuming that it is true that unequal pay exists, how is that violence.
And btw, unequal pay is OK, when people dont’ have the same quals, don’t work he same amount of hours per week, take more time off for non work related activities. Or do you think that it isn’t OK
Yeah I’ll be honest…I think unequal pay is a problem (just not as big as conventional statistics would like us to believe). The women professors in the gender studies department at my university were paid less than the men, same qualifications, same benefits, same expected work…but different pay. It was bizarre. Now that might not be true there anymore; I’ve no idea. But I know that it does happen. When it comes to taking time off…I have to say I’m a big believer in paternal leave. Anyway, even with all that….I totally thought that the reference to unequal pay and… Read more »
Just realized that’s a bit on the sarcastic side…sorry…I’m not trying to poke at you, Rob. It just seemed like the tone of the list was sarcastic too.
I’m not trying to be hilarious.
And no I wasn’t kidding.
I think my sarsacm meter might be on the fritz, was this supposed to be humour.
I think the picture of a beaver at the top would suggest that it’s meant to be humorous. lol. Well, most of it seems to be. Some of it seems to be more serious, though.
Good list! I’d add a corolllary to #17:
“The amount of money spent on pornography does solve a lot of problems.”
@Copyleft, I agree.
And it’s much cheaper than most alternatives.
Hey, it’s even FREE! 8)
