The Good Men Project community. It’s the conversation no one else is having. Here’s why.
—
We started The Good Men Project in 2009 with a clear and important mission. We wanted to dispel the notion that all guys were interested in was sex, sports and beer. (Or that if they were interested in those things, that there was anything wrong with that.) We wanted to topple the myth that guys don’t read. Or that they don’t talk, or have emotions, or cry. We started The Good Men Project to counter the notion that stay-at-home-dads were at home only because they couldn’t get work. That a happy marriage is a myth. That there is only one way to be a man.
We knew it was an important conversation, but didn’t realize the impact we would have. Over 100 million visitors from every country in the world. 500 million total pageviews since we launched. Almost 100,000 stories and articles about men, manhood, masculinity – about men, by men, for men. We didn’t realize the number of women who would want to be a part of the conversation. Or the number of media companies who would see us a both partners and leaders in the conversation – The Huffington Post, HLN, AskMen, Men’s Health, New York Times, Toronto Globe and Mail, XOJane, Parenting, iVillage, MamaMia, BBC, The Atlantic, YourTango, BuzzFeed, Gawker, Upworthy and many others.
We didn’t realize that men (and women!) would have all sorts of reasons for joining in. Because they care about the issues of men and boys. Because they care about eradicating racism, sexism and homophobia.
We didn’t realize how much of a community we would start. How much the people who came to our site would care about each other.
And we want you to join in that community. Details below!

I don’t like people preaching their right wing ideologies about what a man should be when it has been killing men for years and those right wingers don’t care about men anyway except to use them up and then throw them away.
(My comments are a little bit critical, but that’s because I’ve enjoyed this site and think it has a lot of potential still.) I would pay for a membership if one of the perks was to filter out or eliminate the many politically aligned articles that have been showing up more and more frequently. I really enjoyed this site when it was focussed on men improving their relationships and themselves. It’s become less a safe place for men to explore the meaning if manhood, and more a place for people to preach their left wing ideologies. The Good Men project… Read more »
I really, really want the auto re-fresh to go away as well. Not only is it disruptive for the reading experience, but it has happened to me more than once that I was writing a comment which disappeared halfway through and I had to start all over again. Otherwise keep up the good work. You are doing an awesome job!
What I generally do is write my response on “word” and then cut and paste it … just a suggestion.
I don’t really care much either way about the extras but in a few days, when the bank transfer to my paypal account is processed, I will pay for membership – simply because I find GMP to be an excellent platform for reflected discussion on a broad range of topics and well worth paying for. Plants need water in order to grow and flourish. If you water the weeds instead of the flowers you’ll end up with a garden full of weeds instead of flowers. If you give your money to companies that poison the earth, produce toxic foods and… Read more »
That’s an awesome comment stromdal. Thanks for your support.
There we go.
I have wanted an ad-free GMP from the get-go. However, as the other “perks” aren’t a draw for me, the ad-free is the only reason I’d be interested. Yet in the details, it states that a “few, non-intrusive ads from carefully selected sponsors who share our vision may be seen”. I assume I’m not the only person to whom this doesn’t mean “ad-free”? No sponsors’ ads anywhere is “ad-free”. Also, I don’t have a Paypal account, I’d have to borrow a friends…. But unless ad-free is truly ad-free, I’m not sure I see the point? Also, this premium status kicks… Read more »
Hi W.R.R., Appreciate the feedback. We would like to allow some sponsors who really want to be a part of the conversation a way to talk to everyone. Right now, 99% of the ads you see just come in through ad networks — they are not chosen by us, they do not have a relationship with us. Those are the ones that are going away. But brands who are really talking about men’s issues are the ones we would like to include. If there are people like yourself that think that ALL paid messaging should go away, we will consider… Read more »
I’m not sure what “messaging” means at all? Sponsors mean ads. By definition, that’s not ad-free. What does “messaging” entail? The ads really bother me, they either give me headache (with all the flashing and moving) or they can be triggery. I was so thrilled to see “ad-free”, but then it sounded like “a few sponsors we pick”. I also agree with KKZ, the auto-refresh is obnoxious, especially since it makes you see the ads pop up all over again…. The video ads are the worst. Thanks for responding, Lisa. I really want the ad-free. If the photo chosen for… Read more »
Here are some examples of a “sponsor messages” that are not ads: Delancey Place: Eclectic Excerpts, Unexpected and Contrarian, Delivered by Daily Email Behind the Scenes with Air New Zealand and Bear Grylls The reason I kept that sentence in there is because I want to be open and transparent. I can’t guarantee you will never see a paid message again if you are a Premium Member. Maybe down the road, but not today. But any paid messages you do see will be thoughtful, and clearly marked, and in a special section. And if enough people don’t want *any* paid… Read more »
Thank you for the explanation and examples, Lisa. If the pop-ups, video ads and banner/sidebar ads are at least 90% gone, it will be very worth it and make it a lot easier for me to read articles. I appreciate you taking the time to address my questions.
Great — and if you do sign-up and it’s not what you wanted — just let us know. We will find a way to make it better.
Does becoming a member eliminate the auto-refresh?
I could care less about the ads. The auto-refresh, I might actually pay to see that go away. Not only is it way more disruptive to my experience than the ads are, but it also makes my browser go kaflooey if I happen to leave open a tab with a GMP article on it and walk away or close my laptop for the night.
Good idea KKZ. Let me check on whether we can do that and get back to you.
Ok, our tech person is working on writing the code for the override. It may take a couple of days before I can confirm it can be done.
