Joanna Schroeder admits to being just like every other girl.
Just as I was updating my Facebook status update, my email notifications buzzed with a new message from GMP’s social media guru Jack Varnell that read “Fun Blog Fodder” and included a link to an infographic that nearly made me spit out my Divine Dips.
According to NetSpace, which studies social media information, the number one thing that women on social media say they want is (drumroll)… Ice Cream!
Why did that make me spit out my Divine Dips? Check out what I had just posted on Facebook:
I know, it’s the lamest chick-Facebook status update ever. But seriously, how weird are we, women as a group, that we are seemingly always talking about ice cream? Why did I join in on this meaningless chatter? Am I subconsciously trying to be like everyone else… or do women just really love ice cream?
Turns out that according to NetSpace, you men are just as predictable. What’s the number one thing men want, according to what they say on social media? Cars!
At first I scoffed at the notion that men are always talking about cars. I mean, it’s not as if you guys are all gear-head grease monkeys. I thought to myself, Not the men I know, the men I know are talking about important things!
So I clicked over to my husband’s Facebook page. His latest status update?
He’s talking about wanting a Prius! WTH?!
Are we really that predictable, are we really that binary? Women want ice cream, men want cars?
Luckily, there is hope in the data… turns out we’re not all that different. According to NetSpace, men and women actually overlap in 70% of the things we report wanting, and our top three wants are exactly the same, but in different order: cars, ice cream, and pizza.
I guess that’s the new American dream… what used to be apple pie, baseball, and Chevrolet is now ice cream, pizza and a Prius.
What do you guys think? Are men all about cars? Are women all about ice cream? And what the hell happened to baseball?

Why does everyone think hybrid = Prius ?
I suggest a wagon wheel ice cream sandwich to bridge the divide.

If we can learn anything from okcupid its that we’re all walking stereotypes:

Damn… I want ice cream now.
Pretty sure the men are lying about cars. Maybe the women are lying about ice cream?
The Rolling Stones summed it up the best I think with the song ‘Some Girls’ when Mick Jagger sang “French girls they want Cartiers/ Italian girls want cars/ Americian girls want everything in the world you can possibly imagine! LOL
What am I eating right now? Ice cream. But I’m eating it for social justice (Apple-y Ever After)…not because of it’s sweet sweet yumminess…or something. That’s what I’ll tell myself.
I know! Political solidarity is a perfect excuse to break diets. We need more politically themed junk food.
I am a man and I like Ice Cream, I mostly like chocolate and butter pecan. I haven’t seen caramel flavor, but I would like that too.
This has to be cultural. I have four brothers, and none of us have ever cared about cars. We do not talk about cars, we are not aware of cars, we do not notice cars, we do not envy people who have better cars, and we would not know what makes one car better than another. People care, and talk, about the things that define their reality. For example, in the United States the mainstream culture: (i) Defines the male identity in terms of success and power, expressed (in part) by narcissistic trappings of status, such as the type of… Read more »
I think you’re right. I love ice cream and don’t care for cars, but I’m also well aware of how I appear to others when I’m cycling through traffic (not wearing fancy cycling gear=carless, probably homeless), and that no one cares if a man in his late thirties is eating ice cream.
This is an interesting tidbit of information. I am a guy who happens to be a huge gear head. Formula 1 is my favorite sport and I frequently use my facebook to talk about race results or news. I also use facebook to manage a fantasy team and post news and videos about road cars and other racing series. Having said all this I do not find it odd that guys use social media in such a way. I was, however, surprised to see that so many guys talk about cars online that frequently. I don’t have many friends or… Read more »
