In a few hours, former Better Off Ted actor and musician Malcolm Barrett will be in-studio for a "virtual listening party" celebrating his two new musical projects. Brooklyn-born Barrett has appeared in movies like The Hurt Locker and Larry Crowne and has been branching into music.
First up is his free release Professional Amateur: The 15-Minute Mixtape, which is available now, for free. "I made this high on a Sunday," Barrett said, "which was the alternate name for this album."
Much more serious is The Backpacker's Guide To The Galaxy, an album available on iTunes. Barrett said, "If it's not clear one of my favorite books of all time is Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I thought [the] writing style itself was very unique and the humor was so absurd. It spoke volumes. As well as the world and language he created, literally and metaphorically, was so imaginative. I thought with the way I explore different styles, beats and subject matter on the album mirrored the absurd, humorous story-telling quality I had grown to love from the book … It plays almost like a concept album and has me exploring everything from my life growing up in Bed-Stuy, dealing with depression to meeting partying to me imagining myself as a framed detective, my homage to noir as well as a nod to Redman's 'Sooperman Luva' series. "
