This Open Thread has been brought to you by plausible ideas of what feminists are like.
I’m going on vacation to Chicago to see the Fields Museum, and also something about a wedding shower or something. But mostly giant fucking T. Rex. I won’t have the Internet. Don’t smash the place while I’m gone, okay?

Is it just me, or is that just a terrible photo to leave up with the word feminism on it?
Maybe I’m missing something… Is there a joke I’m not getting?
Anyways…
Have a great vacation!
That’s a terrible picture. Seriously, they shouldn’t be suggesting you can ride a bike while wearing high heels.
A woman needs a bicycle like a fish needs feminism? No no, that can’t be it…
I think I saw that one on a David Attenborough doc. “The rare and majestic Oncorhynchus Velocipede, seeking out a bicycle on dry land in order to fertilize its eggs.”
Two Questions:
Do all feminists get Boob lasers or only the leaders?
Who do I talk to if I want to arrange Dick Lasers for Masculists?
You mean you don’t already have a lazer shooting dick?
That’s not going to be a very good design DP – you’ll get laser-beamed in the head if you get an erection. It will only be effective at half mast.
I have to say I laughed at the photo. I think it’s pretty awesome in a way, and reminds me of the 80s.
I forget who wrote this, but they said that Ozy was a “radical” feminist in the “Totally Radical” sense from the 80s. Maybe they meant something like this?
@Monkey
“I forget who wrote this, but they said that Ozy was a “radical” feminist in the “Totally Radical” sense from the 80s. Maybe they meant something like this?”
That would be me, and… not exactly, but close enough.
1: I can totally get behind that kind of radical feminist.
2: You’re coming to Chicago?! I live there!
I was in Chicago, more like. I’m back home now. And all my time was spent either on family obligations, in a museum, or trying to recover from family obligations.
I have the stupidest vacations.
The Field Museum is pretty damn cool though.
Speaking as a geeky Chicago-ite, while the Field Museum is fairly cool, the Museum of Science and Industry is much cooler.
The exhibits are much more interactive, and the content is more science-y.
Feminists…ride poorly designed bikes without helmets?
Okay, I have a question: You people here agree that, barring a good reason, knifing someone in the genitals is sexual assault? And furthermore genital mutilation a.k.a. circumcision is NOT a good reason? Which of course would make genital mutilation sexual assault.
@Lamech: I’m gonna say that while I’m not fond of the idea (unless you’re a consenting adult, then you can alter your body any way you damn well please) I wouldn’t equate it to sexual assault. “Assault” implies that you’re hurting someone for mostly or entirely selfish reasons. Circumcision (both male and female) is performed with the intent of “improving” someone in a manner that the society or religious group considers significant. Their reasons may generally be laughably wrong (and when they’re not, it’s because they highly value social cohesion and conformity but put little to no value on individual integrity), but they’re not harming their children just for the sake of harming them.
In a legal setting when determining punishment things like mens rea is important. Also the actual definition of the laws. So on and so forth. So this isn’t legality I’m talking about. For example, if someone was forced to have sex by a second person, even if it turns out the second person made an innocent mistake* would you tell the first person (s)he wasn’t raped? My point is just because someone has a good excuse, it changes nothing for the victim.
*Yes, I know this seems rather hard. Not the point.
(Need to remember that reply buttons exist here)
My point is that I don’t see a good reason to describe it as “sexual assault” when it does not meet the conditions of either most people’s idea of what “assault” implies nor most legal definitions of “assault”. That’s sort of like saying women wearing sexy clothing is raping men’s eyes. It’s a metaphor that doesn’t really work. Now if you said that it was “sexual mutilation”, then that’s not much of a stretch, and I’d probably agree.

Looks interesting. Anyone here seen it or played it?
The Nostalgia Critic (played by Doug Walker) is the main “character” in an ongoing series of online videos which are long-form reviews of “nostalgic” movies. His website “thatguywiththeglasses.com” is a bit of a hub for all sorts of review shows (comics, music, porn/exploitation films, bad sequels) and The Nostalgia Critic will often do crossover reviews with other critics on the website. In a recent episode he did a crossover review with a relatively new reviewer named “Diamanda” who reviews… Creepy/weird things. The haracter of Diamanda is quite literally insane, and she speaks in a raspy voice and wears joker-esque makeup.
How does this relate to gender discourse? The above crossover review got accusations of transphobia and for the life of me I can’t figure out why. There is a dose of sexism by The Nostalgia Critic right at the beginning of the episode (though he gets a comeuppance for it, so in that sense it might even be instructional).
If anyone else here watches the series, did you notice transphobia?
