Ozy is On Vacation

I’m going to New York City this week! No promises about whether I’ll be able to post. Try not to trash the place.

About ozyfrantz

Ozy Frantz is a student at a well-respected Hippie College in the United States. I’d love to but it’d interfere with my rigorous museums and Broadway schedule. :P

You’re missing the real NYC. Send me an e-mail if you want some info on where to go that has been hard-earned by someone living here for a decade!

I read this and found it quite interesting:

    http://ordinary-gentlemen.com/blog/2012/07/comment-rescue-what-if-anything-is-wrong-with-the-theory-of-heteronormativity/

I can see how some people may see it as a personal attack, but I think it’s worth engaging on its own terms. Very few better places than here to do it.

I’ve been meaning to write something similar for quite a while. There’s a weird class and education gap in who embraces what form of queer activism. Young radicals and older academics tend to go for theory, while everyone else opts for a more practical approach to change. Each could stand to learn from the other, but the sheer arrogance pouring out of the former makes me wonder if it’s possible.

      • Fnord says:

        Note the response by Kazzy:
“I have never participated in “queer studies” of any kind….When I think of “heteronormativity” in the context of my work, I think of forms that say “Mother” and “Father” when they could just as easily say “Parent” in both spots. I think of teachers referring to “Mommies and Daddies” when they could just as easily say “Parents” or “Grown-ups”. I think of libraries that only have books featuring heterosexual relationships or toys that always come paired with males and females or dances that require or strongly suggest that dates only be of opposite gender. I think of how often these things are done without even thinking of their impact.”

That’s not me (though I do post on that site sometimes), but it pretty much encapsulates my response to that.
