How will you pass down more than your name?
The men in my family have always passed down life lessons to me so that I can pass them to the next generation. My father’s father was a first generation Italian immigrant who built a shoe repair business on the streets of Brooklyn. His hands were as leathery as the soles of the shoes he worked on. To say he passed along a hard worth ethic sells him short. He showed us not just the way in which he worked hard, but the way he cared — cared for the shoes, his business, his customers and the family he was working to support. When we visited, there was always a table that was properly set. The meals were feasts, a place where food and stories flowed. We would sit together for hours.
That was the way my own grandfather, in his own way would look make sure the values in his life would get carried on. It’s why Keep Good Going, an initiative by New York Life, resonated with me so much. It has created a series of Life Lessons where insights get shared and passed along. An example of this is a video called “My Grandfather.” A grandson learns to connect with his grandfather in a way that is unexpectedly joyous and insightful. Now, the things the grandson learned will get carried on — he will literally Keep Good Going.
At The Good Men Project, a big part of our mission is to share the family stories that help to define what is good in our own individual lives. We started Good Men Project with stories of defining moments, stories that “changed the teller and changed the listener.” What are the moments you can share that Keep Good Going in your own life? What is your own personal good that you have learned from previous or future generations? Do you have family anecdotes that have been passed on through the generations? A tradition that has been celebrated for decades? A family member whose words made a lasting impact on you?
