Sunshine Highway

You were up all night at the Captain’s Table drinking Tanqueray gin by the old piano
Playing cards and smoking cigars ’til the sun came up

Dropkick Murphys

Usually on Music Monday I share a song with you and tell you what the lyrics of a song mean to me and I ramble on and on about stuff that often occassionally gets all touchy-feely and weepy.  Today is not one of those days.  Sometimes a song is just cool and makes you smile when you hear it.  This is one of those songs.

If you don’t know who the Dropkick Murphys are, you should pause for a moment to smack yourself on the back of the head.  If you do know about the Murphys, you will know that they’re rad-a-licious and fun to listen to.   For you Dropkick virgins, chill.  I’ll give you the quick 411.

No offense to U2 (probably the greatest Irish band ever) but when I think St. Patty’s Day and “real” Irish, I think of only two bands–Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys.  Who doesn’t love a band that features bagpipe solos and an accordion?  Seriously.  You gotta love that shit, right?

There’s nothing special about the lyrics of this song.  This is simply one of those songs that I hear and I kind of tap my feet and I can’t help but have some fun.  I’ve been keeping this one in heavy rotation on my iPod as I pack up my life in Buffalo and prepare to hit the road for sunny So. Cal.

I’m not quite sure when we will actually pull out of the driveway for the last time (huh, huh.  I said “pull out”.  Cool), but it’s going to be sometime between this Friday and Thursday June 30.    I’m still looking for a house to rent in Long Beach, so what I find and when I can move in will play a huge part in when we actually hit the Sunshine Highway and begin our 2011 Summer Road Trip.

I’m trying to come up with a cool name for the adventure.  If you have any suggestions, please let me know.  So far the best I’ve come up with is, “Trip-a-palooza” and that’s just plain weak.

Enjoy your Monday and I invite you to take three minutes and watch the video.  But only if you want to have fun.  Peace out, yo.

Dropkick’s put on probably one of the best shows in the history of entertainment. Going to a Dropkick’s show is like seeing your favorite band and Riverdance all at once.

With a mosh pit. How do you top that?

I’ve loved the Dropkick Murphys for a while now but I haven’t heard this song yet! Thanks for sharing. :)

Well, our road trip 2 years ago (me and 5 kids, aged 2-9) from Kansas to Pennsylvania and back was called The Mother of All Road Trips. Next month’s version, which is Kansas-Virginia-DC-Pennsylvania-Kansas is simply The Mother of All Road Trips: 2011 Edition. Yeah, we’re original like that. At least the kids are a little older now and I don’t have to pack diapers.

    I like Trip-a-palooza. Trip-fest. Movestock.

Hell, I don’t know. I’ve only had one Red Bull so far.

Love the song, BTW. Might have to add to my collection before TMOART:2011.
