Alexander Young traveled to Phillips Arena to watch the Hawks host the Clippers. Contrary to popular belief, Blake Griffin can actually be captured by a camera.
The Hawks play in Phillips Arena, the first arena to have the name of its city written out in 40-foot support beams.
Oh crepe! It’s also the only arena—this side of the Seine—serving up crepes. The ham and swiss was very good, but it would’ve been great if they hadn’t gone overboard with the cinnamon in the batter.
The first time I saw “half and halves” at a Hawks game, it blew my mind. No, not the fact that the glowing striations of beer sit on top of each other, paying no mind to the laws of science, but the fact that an arena would treat beer fans to such an intricate treat. An added bonus: the lighter half of this beer is Atlanta’s own Sweetwater 420 IPA, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of this frosty gem.
This wasn’t exactly what I was expecting when the announcer said, “Ladies and gentlemen, here come the Atlanta City Dancers.” Apparently baseball games aren’t the only place for a group of out-of-shape middle-aged guys to perform in front of 20,000 people.
If you cruise around the club level for long enough, you’ll see stars like Andre Royo—Bubbles from The Wire. There’s no word on whether or not he was studying the announcer to research for his next film, The Ted Williams Story.
The effects of the aforementioned “half and half.”
Contrary to what this child and his comically oversized hand are inferring, the Hawks are actually in second place in the Southeast Division.
Finally, what everyone came to see: the rookie of a generation, Blake Griffin, locked in mortal combat with Atlanta’s own highlight machine, Josh Smith. A few minutes after this picture was taken, Griffin delivered a chest-to-chest check to Hawks power forward Al Horford, knocking Horford out of the next two contests.
Jamal Crawford, captured in a not-so-rare moment of self-immolation. This corner three with 21 seconds left would prove to be the decisive basket.
It looks like Common has a new costar in Just Wright 2.
Very cool photo essay!
Very entertaining photo essay, not just sports alone – love the inclusion and critic of food served around the sport’s event, nice sense of humor woven into the narration, all round picture, fun.
These photos are awesome! I’m going to post this link on my sports blog..and go out to enjoy a crepe right now haha
