Improvisational Training Like Athletes

Basketball Wounds

We want to be consistently excellent on stage, but we are often afraid to do the work it takes to get to that level. I wonder what would happen if we trained for improv like athletes train for games.

Ten Improv Scenes I Am Tired Of Watching (And Sometimes Stupidly Being In) – People and Chairs Guestpost

I was generously offered the opportunity to write a guestpost for Sally Smallwood’s wonderful and insightful improv blog. Here it is: Note: Any scene can be terrific if it’s played enthusiastically and intelligently, but generally when I see players initiate any of the scenes below, it doesn’t end well. PS: I’ve done most of these [...]

Ten things I’ve learned from performing in the Toronto Improv Festival

Note: The Toronto Improv Festival is in town, so if you live in Toronto and you love comedy, or improv, or fun, go to it this week ONLY. It’s every night at the Comedy Bar, and there are teams from all over Canada and the States. Website is here: http://www.torontoimprovfestival.ca/ Note: I performed in the [...]

Ten things I've learned from Kevin Sorbo

Note: last night, I watched an improv set featuring that paragon of herculean manliness, Kevin Sorbo. If you grew up watching Hercules like me, or if you are a fan of Andromeda, you can imagine how sweet and weird and amazing something like that could be. He is doing a couple more sets at the [...]

Guestpost #41: Alex Baird – Ten things I've learned during the past (and arguably the best) twelve months of my life

Alex is an ITC improviser, and a former teammate of mine! Here is her ITC bio: http://www.impatient.ca/people/alex-baird/ The domestic dog is an amazing creature. I got my own dog, Harley (a super-adorable Pomeranian/Papillon mix), last April. I give him most of the credit for making 2010 the best year of my life. He’s noisy and troublesome, [...]

Guestpost #40: Kevin Patrick Robbins – Ten things I’ve learned from teaching improv comedy

Kevin, or KPR, is the founder of the Impatient Theatre Co. in Toronto. Here is his bio: http://www.impatient.ca/people/kevin-patrick-robbins/ KPR is a dynamic and driven person, and somebody I am only just starting to scratch the surface with. I will say, though, that taking classes at the Impatient and joining this community has been one of the most [...]

Guestpost #1: Jill Bernard – Ten things I’ve learned from opening a non-profit improv theater

Jill Bernard is a teacher, improviser, theater founder, and one-woman dynamo based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her one-woman improv musical Drum Machine is the best thing ever. Here is the theater (or theatre) that she recently founded: http://hugetheater.com/ People use a lot more toilet paper and paper towels than anyone could ever predict. The Minnesota Department [...]

Ten things I've learned from long-form improv classes

The Impatient Theater has great classes. Have a strong opinion. Care about each other. Make the active choice. Aim for beauty, settle for comedy. Find the first odd thing in a scene: that’s the game. Be honest. Trust your partner. Play against type. Avoid puns. Don’t talk about what you’re doing. It’s boring.
