- Railroad Flat is a tiny area of Calvaras County, right in the middle of the State of California. They have giant pinecones, one general store, and a post office. Why grandma retired there, I’ll never know.

- Grandma had small rugs all over her floor. When I asked her why, she said “so that I don’t walk around shuffling my feet like an old person.“
- When my grandma died, we had to go through her house. We found all of these small journals, filled with comments about her trip to visit my dad in Toronto, before he’d even met my mom. He had a girlfriend at the time named Bluma. The journals were filled with small details about discounted vegetables, and then deeply emotional admissions about her feelings for my dad and his life in Toronto. It was banal and sublime. Reading her writing, I could picture her saying those words, crackling out in her shrill voice. I learned a lot about her, my dad, and myself from those pages.
