100 Words on Love, by Henry Cherry
–
Love is a burned calf your first girlfriend gets on the back of another guy’s motorcycle, the brutal confidence your older brother exhibits getting busted buying cheap swill underage. Love is the calm fury pumping through you as the last dog your parents got while married takes the needle into oblivion because hip dysplasia left her crawling on the floor. Love is a streetlamp bent over a darkened street reminding the careful to be cautious, and the rest of us to roam free of its beckoning safety. Love is that one fine exhalation you chase after the rest of your life.
