Think about
the concept of
pure happiness.
Right now,
there’s an image
in your head.
What is it?
Mine can be seen in the picture above. When I think of the idea of happiness, the first thing I see is Gene Kelly dancing and stomping in puddles–oblivious to the usual discomforts of the rain and lost to the joy of new love. It’s the song I find myself singing whenever things are going right and my smile refuses to be washed away.
What are the things you think of? What are the songs you sing? What are your special symbols of happiness?
On vacation in Hawaii with my extended family (ie., brothers, kids, grandparents) all hanging out together at mealtimes and laughing at the same jokes and youtube videos…!
* perfectness, not perfectioness
This text I’ve written a while ago sums it up: http://www.minglingpb.com/2013/10/20/1/ but basically I believe the first step to find happiness is to stop for a while and think about all the greatness and perfectioness that surrounds you and recognise you’re part of a very delicate and perfectly connected network…hence you understand your actions can positively impact other people’s lives and you can set your mind free from the minimal elements that can cause you stress
Gene Kelly is the king, but I can’t copy that. Ok, there’s a scene in my fourth favorite movie, THE CAMERAMAN, in which a little monkey shanks a gangster sneaking up on Buster Keaton. The smile he throws to the camera cements him as the Greatest Cinematic Monkey of All Time, which is the most competitive category. I laugh and clap my hands every time I see it.
A close second are Brooklyn-accented bartenders in old movies saying “ersters.”
All the warm and happy feels for Alexa’s reply!! I feel the same way, truly. Happiness is receiving an @, or a message, or a call that tells you you made a positive difference in someone’s day – or someone’s life – and telling them they do the same for you. For me, a happy image is also the boarding pass to a place I’ve never been, or watching the landscape from the car window change from the flat city, to hills and trees, then to mountains or something I don’t get to see everyday. Hoping 2014 brings me plenty… Read more »
The images I most associate with happiness now are the closed-eyed, contented smiles on my kids’ faces when I give them a hug. I always worry about all the things I’m not able to give them, but they really are happy just to have warm clothes and hot meals and cuddles at the end of the day.
Honestly? All the new friends I’ve made this year make me really happy. VERY happy. I guess my baseline state is worried, anxious, nervous, incomplete, fearful. I have accepted that. But it’s really kept me from doing a lot of things in life. However, meeting all my new twitter people has really given me a lot of confidence. It’s taught me that everybody needs support – all artists and writers and anyone trying new things or making themselves vulnerable out there in the real world – and that supporting others is totally joyful and fulfilling. It’s so sad of me… Read more »

Oh, the one solitary thing that truly always makes me happy? Ren & Stimpy – Space Madness and Mr. Horse.
