When did you
give up on
The Simpsons?
The Simpsons has begun its 25th season and shows no sign of stopping. It’s been a part of my life since I was 13 years old, so it came as something of a surprise to me when I realized that I hadn’t actually seen a new episode of the series in over 7 years. I still love the characters (and play with them everyday via Simpsons Tapped Out on my iPad), but at a certain point it felt like they’d gone everywhere they could and the show had lost its magic spark.
Do you still watch it? Do you know anyone who does? Would you miss it if it went off the air or would you not even notice? Do the characters even need the show to remain an important part of our popular culture?
And–most importantly–isn’t weird that so many of us are now the same age as Marge and Homer?
Edited: So, it would appear based on the response I’m getting, that I’m the only person who’s stopped watching, which may be the case, but then the question is–If it’s still as popular as it ever was, why does no one ever seem to talk about it? Is it just such an expected part of our lives that it is no longer part of the cultural conversation?
I stopped watching in 2005. I went off to college and largely stopped watching television. There were a few shows I continued to follow, but those were weekly events with friends. Nobody was interested in The Simpsons, anymore. I was shocked when I came across an article that said Flanders and Krabappel got married, and by that time, it was old news?!
They’re still funny, just not HAHA funny (stopped watching about 9 years ago).
I love the show and will still make many references to it but….I kinda got bored and wandered away to see what else was on years ago. Like 15 years ago. I will still tune in for “very special” episodes such as the Portlandia guest spot or the del Toro Halloween special though.
I’m also holding out hope that one day I’ll be famous enough to be asked to do a guest spot on the show. But with my luck, I’ll be invited on “The Cleveland Show” instead.
I still catch an episode of “the Simpsons” here and there. I can’t imagine – with all of the amazing television right now – how anybody could make time for anything that’s been running this long with any regularity. I think it’s great, though; it means that serialized TV has more loyal followers than the Maharishi. I still also occasionally catch “South Park.” But I don’t want to become one of those people who literally can’t miss an episode of any of the hundreds of shows I watch, so I would not say I am a Simpsons viewer. So long… Read more »
I quit watching several years ago as well, even tho I still love the characters and memories. I watch less tv in general though and when I do catch an episode I still enjoy it. Tapped Out is my favorite game.

You aren’t alone, Allan. I love the Simspons something fierce, and rewatch earlier seasons on the regular. But I stopped watching new episodes 3 or 4 years ago. Sunday night TV got better and new episodes got a little tired. Still tune in for Halloween specials, though. And I play, um, a robust amount of Tapped Out (marisaemily).
Didn’t! Love the show! Tapped out addicted : Jurjana
I was an obsessed fan until about four years ago when I suddenly stopped. They actually lost me after their episode where they divided the school by gender. I thought it was an obnoxious over complication of gender issues, distorting what people who are conscious of gender would actually believe or think. To me, their commentary was always more nuanced and hilarious in the past. Totally my personal opinion and I know there are great arguments against it. But what strikes me is that I went from watching about two episodes a day to suddenly not watching at all, withoutaking… Read more »
Nope. Haven’t given up. Is the show still as funny as it once was? No. But it still has the ability to make me laugh at least once or twice per episode, and there aren’t many shows that can do that. And I still look forward to the Halloween episodes every year.
Still watching. Missed several shows in the past, but only due to obligations and logistical constraints. It’s still brilliant, relevant, lovably edgy. I will never give up on The Simpsons! “Never! Never, Marge. I can’t live the button-down life like you. I want it all: the terrifying lows, the dizzying highs, the creamy middles. Sure, I might offend a few of the bluenoses with my cocky stride and musky odors — oh, I’ll never be the darling of the so-called ‘City Fathers’ who cluck their tongues, stroke their beards, and talk about “What’s to be done with this Homer Simpson?”
I haven’t. It’s still some of the best writing on TV.

I still watch it every week and there are still some really funny moments on the new episodes.
