What’s your real life
mutant ability?
Even in the Marvel Universe some mutants have it a lot better than others. For every mutant who has an awesome power like invulnerability, weather control or laser eyes, there are many others who definitely got the booby prize–like Beak, who had all the power (and weakness) of a human-sized chicken and Skin, who had 6 extra feet of skin.
(Note: Every list of lame X-Men powers/characters–and there are dozens of them on the Internet–always includes Cypher, who could translate every language he ever came across, which I personally think is an awesome power, but then I also think Wolverine is lame, so comic fans and I are clearly operating on a different wavelength.)
This kinda makes me grateful that such mutations are fictional, because I just know I’d have ended up being one of those mutants like Toad or Blob, whose names aren’t the slightest bit ironic. That said, I have noticed that a lot of us do have unique little quirks–most often based on pure coincidence or natural talent–that could be considered a kind of mutant ability if you squinted and cocked your head just the right way while you looked at it.
For example, I have the amazing ability to make all of the staples disappear out of a stapler simply by picking it up and attempting to staple something. Now, I know what you’re thinking–I just worked in a place where people stapled a lot of stuff and I just happened to have to refill it quite a lot. And that’s probably correct, but at a certain point it happened so consistently it felt like something I could do by will. It’s possible that my power wasn’t to make the staples disappear themselves, but rather the ability to always choose a stapler that needed to be refilled, regardless of how many I had to choose from.
I’ll never know. It shall forever be a mystery.
Can you think of anything you do on the regular that feels like your own special mutant power? Is it cool? Is it lame? Is it better than being a human chicken?
I can eyeball a load of laundry and grab the number of needed hangers without actually counting. Within one every time.
